Ten of our final sixteen games are at home.

Too bad we have the worst home record in the West.

How terrible is that? Who uses home to their disadvantage?

MN PTS - Magic Number Points
MN W - Magic Number Wins
RMN PTS - Reverse Magic Number Points
RMN W - Reverse Magic Number Wins

Magic Number
For every point the Flyers receive or for every point that an opposition lose, their magic numbers go down. This magic number is set up to represent pure elimination, which means if the number reaches 0 the Flyers are guaranteed to finish at least 1 point ahead of the opponent so no tie breakers will be assessed. At 0.5 tie breakers apply.

Reverse Magic Number
For Every point the Oilers lose or for every point the opponents gain this number will go down. This magic number is set up to represent pure elimination, which means if the number reaches 0 the Oilers are guaranteed to finish at least 1 point below of the opponent so no tie breakers will be assessed. At 0.5 tie breakers apply.

Tie Breaker Rules

1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).

2. The greater number of games won, excluding games won in the Shootout. This figure is reflected in the ROW column.

3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.

4. The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season. NOTE: In standings a victory in a shootout counts as one goal for, while a shootout loss counts as one goal against.

Looks bleak, but still mathematically possible.

My question is how many of those 16 games would we need to win in order to have a good chance at the post season?
Do you think a 9-5-2 record would do it?
Likley 10-4-2 is a minimum.

Depends on the amount of three point games and whether the top teams pull away.

So yes, its doable. Question is whether this Oiler team is going to do it.

The Oilers have 12 wins in 32 games. To make the playoffs, they need to double their win total to 24 in the next 16 games. That doesn't seem likely to me.

Ya, at this point I just hope we go like 9-5-2 and make it interesting. It is almost impossible to make it, but, come one, just make it interesting.

This is a playoff race, and they're blowing it. If they had held on against Detroit and San Jose they'd be in right now. These are the games that they're going to have to learn from, so next time it doesn't happen.

They could still get in this year but not without help from management and a bit of luck. The only reason they're still in it right now is because the teams in front of them are just not impressive, yet the Oilers are still finding a way to lose to them.

To make it they need a five gamer right now. And then they have to play alright the last ten.

They are doing what it takes to stay right around a point per game pace on the road and at home.

I expect them to continue to do that until the end of the season. Just enough points to stay in a position where they aren't in and yet not quite to the point where they are completely out of the race.

Perfect scenario for a bipolar team with a bipolar fanbase... switching from disgust to faint hope after every game result.

Watching this Habs-Bruins game, I haven't seen the Oilers play with even 50% of the heart shown in this game since 06

I thought the same thing when I was was watching a ranger game the other day. Seems to me like we still need quite a bit of work if we plan to compete with teams like that

It's amazing what a wholesale change in the front office and coaching staff can do for a team.

Seriously, the Habs looked worse than the Oilers for the vast majority of the 2011-2012 season.

With SJ 5 points up on us, we almost have to win out. Why would anyone think a .500 team can win out? We aren't that team.

With that being said, we are playing meaningful games and I do hope we go on a run, get some excitement and have the team learn how to win.

.500, is play on numbers, to compete for a playoff spot the Oil need to stop playing for only 1pt. The coach needs to realize it is better to win in regulation and get 2pts and the opponent 0pts. Until this philosphy changes, the Oil will not be a participant in the playoffs.

Its pretty funny that even though we haven't had the best record in the last 5 games, we're still not out of it. Its getting more unlikely, but if we win some key games, we can still do it.

It's going to be incredibly tough. For the team to even have a chance they need to win 10-12 games out of the remaining 16. They need to win their games against Columbus, Colorado, Calgary, Vancouver, LA and Phoenix and not allow them to get any points. And even then winning that many may not even guarantee a spot. I think we might finish 10-12th. Hopefully I'm wrong!

Big games tonight:
San Jose v Detroit*
Nashville v Phoenix
LA v St Louis*
Edmonton v Columbus*
Vancouver v Colorado

The *'d games are ultra-important. Two of those stars have to go through for us to legitimately have a shot at the playoffs tomorrow morning.
So, time to join the LA and Detroit bandwagon.

By this point it is probably too late... BUT if we can manage to win tonight we will be 3 points behind STL for 8th, and 3 points behind SJS (if they lose to DET) for 7th.

I'll edit this as the "master" copy, but so far...
San Jose v Detroit * Bad, bad result.

Nashville v Phoenix Checkmark

LA v St. Louis * Checkmark

Edmonton v Columbus Gigantic Fricken Checkmark.

Vancouver v Colorado You can't always get what you want.

We got two of the stars. If we had the third, then you can say fate wants us in the playoffs. But 2 gives us some life. 3 points out of a playoff spot.

10-5.

That's what we need. A nice four or five game win streak would be real welcome right about now.

I don't buy this theory though I'm certainly in the minority. You need to play to get 2 points yourself and let everything else work itself out. The Oilers have put themselves in a position where they need help. Why would you take a chance late in the game where you could piss away a point and a chance at the bonus point because you're worried about the other team you're playing against? Tonight is a perfect example and Horcoff even said in the second intermission how they wanted to take it in regulation. Is Columbus really going to be the team standing in their way of the playoffs? It's not the end of the world if CBJ picked up a point tonight as long as the Oilers got their 2. The Oilers just need to keep getting the 2.

We need to win our next 2 home games against the Canucks and Flames and then win 2 games on our 4 game road-trip.

If we can do that, we give ourselves a chance with all the home games to finish the year.
