The Luongo Story: What really is going on.

Just posted by Lebrun, Great read

http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/i...w-luongo-talks

Quote:
Last week in Phoenix when the Canucks were in town there, Vancouver assistant GM Laurence Gilman met with his old pal and mentor Cliff Fletcher, senior adviser with the Leafs. Those two guys talk all the time but, on this occasion, Fletcher revisited the Luongo dialogue with Gilman.

That conversation between Gilman and Fletcher sparked Vancouver GM Mike Gillis to follow up and phone Toronto GM Dave Nonis this past week to further explore those talks.

This in itself is a story because Gillis and Nonis, I don’t believe, have ever spoken to each other regarding any trade, as some ill will existed after the former replaced the latter as GM in Vancouver. Usually it’s been other members of each front office communicating on Luongo, not Gillis and Nonis straight on. So that’s perhaps an important shift in this story.

Gillis and Nonis spoke this week and, while there’s no deal that’s imminent and there may never be a deal, it certainly appears there’s groundwork built here for the two teams to keep tabs on this until Wednesday.

Nonis has always kept interest in Luongo, whom he traded for in Vancouver when he was GM, but talks went silent between both clubs for quite a while until last week.

It was predictable both clubs would eventually circle back to each other, the Leafs always being the most obvious fit for Luongo.

One source told ESPN.com Friday that two other NHL teams have also called on Luongo over the past week. Though how serious that interest is remains difficult to ascertain.

I think Tampa is the best guess.

Florida really does have something special in Markstrom. I am finally willing to admit that. They also don't need to be immediately competitve. When they're ready to make a deep playoff run, Markstrom will be more than ready.

My guess for the other team is the Capitals.

Story is more about Gillis and Nonis than it is about Luongo.

Until Luongo lifts his embargo on TO, then all this is mere fodder for the Canadian sports networks to fill their deadline day coverage with.

Lol at watching them twiddling their thumbs last season... For eight straight hours.

Ah, but the other two teams, nameless American ones, of course, ARE more interesting.

I think most canucks fans would be perfectly happy with bozak and a 2nd or grabo for luongo type deal.

Not sure about leaf fans, but just going from the responses.

I would speculate that the possible mystery teams would be two of:

Washington
Tampa Bay
New York Islanders
Philly
New Jersey

He has been the difference. Had like 96 SV% last week. Played well last night even if he let in 4 goals. 3 deflections, and cant remember the last goal. Markström has been spectacular.

Lou makes no sense, and Florida wouldnt be willing to give up even close to what Nucks would want for him. 10 years with Lou.. yikes!

I wouldn't be surprised if Tanpa is one of the teams.

Maybe Washington/Philly as the other?

Hopefully this thread doesn't derail. I'm not expecting a lot, I think it's time for both parties to part. Luongo has been a one of the best Canucks I'm franchise history, I thank him for everything he's done in Vancouver.

I could see the NYI as a sleeper team. They always seem to be interested in making bold moves. That team is ready to take that next step.

I would do grabovski for luongo, resign Bozak and continue looking for a upgrade at center.

Sounds like Gillis having to accept what most have said all along, the market for goalies is so soft that Luongo has pretty much zero value. Couple with Canucks having to get that contract off the books for next season one way or another and there isn't any hockey trade to be made.

This isn't an indictment of Luongo as a hockey player. He is a good goalie and should have at least four more good years in him. It's just a reflection of how ugly that contract is with a shrinking cap and changed rules for cap hits in case of retirement.

I have no faith whatsoever Luongo gets dealt until the off season. There has been too many false alarms. I will believe it when I see it.

Markstrom looked very good in a recent FL/NYI game.

I don't think it's Luongo having zero value, it's that Gillis wants to make a hockey trade and teams aren't willing to do that, they're willing to take that contract off their hands but Vancouver has to take something back too with a draft pick or two and not a hockey deal.

I always suspected that Nonis has remained interested in Luongo throughout this process. The Luongo trade was really his defining move in Vancouver and he has seen first hand how a great goalie can make a GM's job easier. Some of his comments and those of Burke before him make it sound like he is not that confident in Reimer. Maybe Luongo has now indicated that he would consider a trade to Toronto.
