He kept his options open like any smart player would.

But I think we all saw this coming.

Very deep organization. What's ridiculous is they've drafted in the top 20 like once in 20 years.
But when is the last time they drafted an actual impact player?

I'm not trying to be contrary or ignorant, I simply don't get it...at all. I've been a member for quite awhile and for as long as I can remember people are fawning over Detroit's drafting ability. Is it because of the late Rounders that were unearthed 15 or so years ago?

Because the last time an actual impact player was drafted by them is 2004? And he was already in his mid 20's. They haven't drafted a full time NHLer other than Smith since 2006. I like both Nyquist and Tatar alot, but I'm not sure I'm understanding why the wings scouts get such great props around here?

Again, I'm not meaning any of this to insult anyone, I'd really like an explanation I suppose?

Down year in 2006. 07 we got Smith. Nyquist in 08. Tatar in 09.

2010 and 2011 were the years we hit home runs. 2012 was average, at best.

Everyone on this side of the fence will say "Holland likes 'em override Nyquist Tatar Jurco Mrazek blah blah blah", and there's some truth to that.

Everyone on the other side of the fence will say "Once Datsyuk and Zetterberg are gone in 4 years they'll have nothing, who have they drafted blah blah blah", and there's some truth to that as well.
The truth lies somewhere in the middle, and which side you agree with is a matter of perspective. We probably don't have a Datsyuk or Lidstrom in waiting, but some of the guys we've taken in the last 5 years will turn out to put up respectable numbers in a winged wheel.

What's all the hype with this kid? Is he even close to a Justin Schultz or Jake Gardiner level prospect or is he just hyped because he comes from the same system?

Guys who haven't proven a thing in the NHL.

The last draft that produced NHLers was 05 - Kindl, Abdelkader, Helm

You won't find many Wing fans that disagree with you. From 03-06 we had a rough patch. In the span of 4 drafts we produced only: Howard, Franzen, Quincey, Kindl, Helm, Abdelkader, Emmerton & Matthias. So we got a #1G, a top 6 winger, 2 top 5 dmen, an elite 3rd line C, 2 4th liners & whatever Matthias has become in Florida.

All lot of the guys that were boom-bust busted. The guys that did make it made it as bottom 6 guys/ bottom 4 guys.

From 07-09 we had "Average" drafts. In that time we've gotten: Smith, Andersson, Nyquist, Ferraro, Tatar, Jensen & Almqvist. So a top5 dman with top pairing potential,
2 wingers with top 6 potential, one with top line, a middle six prospect, and 2 dmen with bottom 4 potential.

10-12 is when we hit our stride for the prospect pool. In that period we picked up: Sheahan, Jarnkrok, Pulkkinen, Mrazek, Jurco, Sproul, Ouelllet, Backman, Quine, Marchenko, Frk, Athanasiou, Tvrdon & DeKeyser. While most of these guys are all still prospects they all will be getting ELCs, that's leaving out some guys who are 50/50, it will be a minimum of 14/22, with up to 17/22 guys getting an ELC.

Not to mention must of those guys have top 6 or top 4 potential. How this crop does will be determined by how some of the boom or bust guys do. There is enough safe picks that this crop should give us at least slightly better results from the 03-06 time frame.

Good signing for the Wings..
Have been watching and waiting, like many here, for him to sign (whether it was with the Wings or not, glad he pick the Wings).
Whether it's just hype or not, adding any prospect to an organization without giving up any assets, is a plus.

Tough to say...

Greg Carey
Antoine Laganiere
Nate Schmidt
Eriah Hayes

And to a lesser extent...

Ryan Walters
Steven Whitney
Rylan Schwartz
Drew LeBlanc
Pat Mullane
Trevor van Riemsdyk
Mark Zengerle
Chris McCarthy

And even lesser...

Giancarlo Iuorio
Carter Rowney
Steve Spinell

Anyone please correct me if any of these guys are not signing this year or have already signed, or if I am just being ridiculous for even including some of them on a "to watch" list, haha.

I don't know how you can call a draft pick from 2 years ago a home run.

Oh, and is DeKeyser going to play for the Redwings this season?

Basically every non-homer Wings fan agrees with you.

The last impact player to be drafted was Jakub Kindl in 2005.

since 1996, they've had two 1st rounders that busted. they've only had 6 1st rounders in that time.

jesse wallin and tom mccollum.

all the other ones were traded for talent.

Well, I guess Brendan Smith and Niklas Kronwall weren't wasted.
