The Badgers lost today and their season is over.

All eyes on Michael Mersch. Will he forgo his senior year and sign an ELC?

Forbort with an assist on Kristo's go ahead goal for UND. 2-1 over Niagra with 16:00 left in 3rd.

Zoned out for most of UND's game but from what I've seen of him, I really feel like Forbort's offensive game won't round out but he can definitely make it as a defensive dman with the ability to move the puck only a bit (think Mitchell). He's very good with his stick and REALLY likes to use it but is also physical when needed.

I think the Kings would be happy if Forbort developed into something similar to Ellerby. Maybe a bit more offense while not being quite as physical.

We are seeing close to the same thing. The only real different is that I don't think that DF will have to deal with size issues as much as KE does. DF doesn't play a lanky game like KE does and that is where they differ.

That said I will be happy to see DF make the NHL and stick as a 4/6dman. I like his game allot but I see a couple of gaps in his development that should have happened already. He could get to MCH and like the physical play more and he still has room to develop so he could become more.

It was a great game. I really liked the way the whole ND team played. DF made a few really solid plays in the D zone.

Solid and fun one to see.

Not 100% familiar with NCAA rules but it was called contact to the head, which was there. Sucks to see him go in such a critical game.

Yeah that might be the case. I mean they even reviewed it. I'm not fimilar with NCAA rules either. Still kind of lame though. I was exicted to watch him play in what will soon be his home arena in Manchester

I think people need to look past the fact that Forbort was a 1st round pick.

Forbort was drafted to be a two way defenseman, maybe even projected more as a puck mover. It just hasn't happened offensively for him. As for Ellerby, right now he is playing quality hockey for one of the best teams in the league. They both move pretty well, but neither is overly physical. If Forbort can be a quality 3rd pair defender like Ellerby has been we should be happy.

I'm sure if DL thought that Forbort's ceiling is an Ellerby, he probably would have traded him by now. Forbort has yet to play a single minute of professional hockey and you guys are already putting a ceiling on him. It's way too early gents. Just give it some time.

Ellerby was a healthy scratch for alot of Florida's games this year. The only reason he's playing is because we have so many injuries. Does he play when Willie or Greene come back? Say we trade for Smid, who becomes the healthy scratch? It's probably Ellerby. Forbort is still raw, I hope he becomes a Willie Mitchell, not a Keaton Ellerby lol

1) you forget how many first rounders don't even make the NHL.

2) Forbort being compared to Ellerby stylistically isn't the same as upside.

KE is a really young large dman and they take a ton of time to develop their games up to the NHL level most of the time. KE should project out to be a very solid #4dman. Second pairing though not your key guy out of the pair and that is a great thing. Same with Forbort.

The #3 guy of your second pairing is the guy who can step up to your top pairing if needed and can run a PP unit. Think Mat Greene as the perfect example of a #4 dman as an example. KE and Forbort (though they do play a different style of game somewhat) are both big and more suited to being good in their own end then being offencive dynamos. Neither will be as physical as MG but they will be more agile and have greater reach so it balances out.

Of the two (KE and DF) DF has more O skill and is a more agile skater but I think that while he has improved his O that it isn't going to develop as well as it looked like it could at the draft. I look at it this way, he was a high risk first round pick who is big and can skate who at worst should make it to the NHL. He has developed into a solid NHL caliber prospect that has size, can skate really well and sees the game at an NHL level already.

He doesn't look like a first pairing D today and likely won't ever but he is still a big solid young Dman who looks good for the NHL. That makes him anything but a disappointment to me. You draft a kid hoping they can exceed your expectations. But most GM's know the day that they draft them what these kids should at least be able to do once they get to the NHL.

Futa said that Forbort was a risk reward player. I agree. you risk a 1st rd pick and are rewarded by getting an NHL dman out of it. Anything over that is gravy.

Emerson Etem >>>> Derek Forbort.

Been saying this since draft day. Etem is going to be a stud. Forbort is going to have to go back for another year at North Dakota and we probably won't see him with the Kings till at least 2014-2015, unless he plays in Manchester when he leaves school (AKA big disappointment)

Etem is good but I doubt he becomes a stud IMO. Personally I was hoping LA had drafted Bjugstad that year.
