"Negative value" player trades?

We know how highly paid/under performing players are supposed to have negative value in a cap era.

Has there ever been a case in a trade where you could clearly say a traded player had negative value? An example would be:

bad contract player + 2nd rd pick for a 5th rd pick.

Lombardi with Nashville.

He was injured, had a contract that could not be insured, so Franson was added to the trade to Toronto. Really not one of Poile's stronger moments.

"Unfortunately, Matthew Lombardi's concussion last season and recovery left us uncertain about his ability to come back for this season, and that uncertainty has made it difficult for us to move forward, plan and develop our lineup," Poile said. "We never like to give up young homegrown talent like Cody Franson, but have to give up something in order to put ourselves in position to do other things to improve our team, which we are committed to doing between now and training camp."

Pretty brutal for Nashville.

Beauch to Anaheim for Gardiner if we took a salary dump back in Lupul.

That trade was a beauty for both teams.

On paper it looks like Toronto robbed Anaheim but you can't dispute the on ice product they have iced since Beauch's return.

I think you could consider the Phaneuf trade that as well, if it wasn't for his salary no way the Flames trade him.

Philly traded Roenick and a 3rd to LA for future considerations just after the 2005 lockout - as I remember the future considerations turned out to be nothing but I could well be mistaken.

Anyone remember?

crosby for sure

But Komisarek.

God that lombardi trade bites me in the ass every time I think about. But Poile made the smart decision as we couldnt risk Lombardi getting paid to not play, at that time. I would LOVE Franson back, so many preds fan hated on him for not being a top4 dman. He is a PP specialist and has the best point shot Ive ever seen accuracy wise.

Dont know if this counts

Devils traded Vladimir Malakhov and a 2007 1st round draft pick to the Sharks for Jim Fahey and the rights to Alexander Korolyuk

Matt Niskanen in the Neal/Goligoski trade.

This is the best example.

The Devils had to unload Malakhov for cap reasons, and they gave the Sharks a 1st-round pick in order to do that.

Fahey played 13 games for the Devils (face-saving attempt?) and Korolyuk, 30 years old at the time of the trade, had gone back to Europe 2 years previously and never came back to NA.

That 1st-rounder, later traded to St. Louis for Bill Guerin, turned out to be David Perron.

Another great example is the Philadelphia-Phoenix trade of March 2009 which sent Upshall + a 2nd-rounder to Phoenix for Carcillo.

Philly was caught in a cap crunch by the return of Bričre from LTIR, and had to dump salary.

Brian Savage to Blues from Coyotes for future considerations and Tom Koivisto, including condition that Coyotes would claim him back from waivers during following off-season.

Malakhov is by far the best example.

Kolzig from Tampa to Toronto. He was injured with a pricey contract. Toronto took him on for a 4th round pick.

A current player with negative value would have to be Luongo.

Wasn't Mogilny traded to the Sharks with a first round pick for essentially nothing?

That's not negative value at all.. how do you know the Habs didn't ask for a roster player + 1st for Rivet?
