The Louisiana Derby.

With 14 scheduled to run, this race becomes an open crap shoot where the best horse easily may not win.
Revolutionary impressed with his furious finish in the Withers. But he got into trouble with a smaller 8 horse field, and may not find a way home.
Bafferts Code West will try to take this from somewhere up front, but he'll be getting a lot of outside pressure.
Albert Stall has two interchangeable horses that like the track in Sunbeam and Departing.
Steve Asmussen throws off Gary Stevens for his poor decision on Proud Strike in the Risen Star. Corey Nakatani replaces him.

Gary Stevens is in Dubai, so that could be the reason too.

I have Orb in the Florida Derby.

Sunbean in the Louisiana Derby. I'm going deep a bit as he is a LA-bred who has won over two turns multiple times on the track even though it was only against state-bred horses.

Animal Kingdom in the Dubai World Cup. I like the line and know Graham Motion will have him ready.

Pretty good life. You win the Kentucky Derby and then retire to Australia where you start a stud life.

Quote:
The drought for America in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) came to an end March 30 when champion Animal Kingdom galloped clear in the homestretch for a spectacular score at Meydan Racecourse.

Joel Rosario rode the 2011 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) victor to a 2 1/2-length triumph in the $10 million event—the world's richest horse race —for trainer Graham Motion and owners Arrowfield Stud and Team Valor International.

Australia also shares in this World Cup victory as a majority interest in the 5-year-old son of Leroidesanimaux, who was purchased by John Messara's Aussie-based Arrowfield from Barry Irwin's Team Valor last December. Animal Kingdom is to begin his stud career later this year in Australia.

^ 6-3. Orb wins, Itsmyluckyday finishes second.

Pletcher seemed reserved after winning the Louisiana.

So we're both winners. It may have been a slow time, but as far as I'm concerned, if you win the Florida Derby, you're in the catbird seat. You've beaten 4 or 5 horses who are showing up to Louisville.

As I said a few weeks ago, the pressure is on with the connections to Shanghai Bobby. I wonder what happens now.

Pre-race comments weren't enthusiastic.

Revolutionary takes the big race down at the Gentilly Oval. Sunbean got blocked and had to check, he was ready to run.

Interesting comments from you guys. Here's my take.

IMO. Orb cements himself as the horse to beat in the Derby.
That.......was an impressive effort in their was zero pace.
Johnny kept Orb in sniffing distance, then wore down a game Itsmyluckyday.
This shows Orb is not only capable of making one big run (which is the likely path the Derby winner will use), but has multiple runs in him (today) when needed.
Again. Very impressive.
They tried to get Shanghai Bobby to rate today. He had none of it.

Revolutionary was a game winner, no doubt. He's a fighter. An admirable quality.
But......there were trips behind him.
The winner, although wide, never lost momentum circling the field.
Mylute was game, but also had a clear trip.
Sunbeam as noted, was blocked through the lane. He won't get another chance, but deserves one.
The horse to watch is Departing, who was blocked and altered course. He finished strong when clear. Probably too late for him as well.

If you haven't seen Dreaming of Julia pulverize her competition, it is worth a watch:

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-raci...ulfstream-oaks

Something to think about:

http://blogs.courier-journal.com/rac...over-the-moon/

Quote:
McGaughey now is poised to have his first Kentucky Derby horse since Saarland was 10th in 2000, the Hall of Fame trainer’s only horse in the race since he finished second and third with Easy Goer and Awe inspiring.

“It’s my dream, and we’ve never tried to press to get there,” McGaughey, a product of Lexington Tates Creek, said of the Kentucky Derby. “… When the 2-year-olds come in, I always try to think: Will one of these take us to the Derby where we will have an opportunity to win? It stands on top of all of them for me, and it always has.”

Velazquez very likely will have a choice to make as he also rides Verrazano, the electrifying and unbeaten Tampa Bay Derby winner, in Saturday’s Wood Memorial.

“(Verrazano) has to come back and run a big race very impressively and come back good,” Velazquez said. “Hopefully Shug and the team will give me the opportunity to see how the horses come back before I make a premature decision. I’ve gone to the Derby with the favorite and wound up riding something else for three years back to back. And I picked up the horse for the Derby who won it (Animal Kingdom in 2011). These are two very, very good horses. A little bit different style of running, but both are very impressive. You just wish they both get there and hopefully we can make a decision then.”

And then comes today's decision:

Quote:
Champion Shanghai Bobby to Miss Triple Crown

Shanghai Bobby is no longer being considered for the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) or the Triple Crown races following his fifth-place finish in the Florida Derby (gr. I) March 30 at Gulfstream Park.

A Starlight Racing release said the 2012 champion juvenile male will be given time off and be pointed to a late summer or fall campaign. The release said that from a physical standpoint, Shanghai Bobby appears to have come out of the Florida Derby in good shape but trainer Todd Pletcher believes the energy level of the Harlan's Holiday colt is not where he'd like for it to be.

Wood Memorial

What can you say.
This is the race of the year to this point.

Verrazano cannot be falted.
He better show his best as he'll be under attack on Saturday.
Don't know if Verrazano can make the lead from #8.....or if he even wants it. They are slowing the works.

Just inside is Always In A Tiz who adds blinkers, which should put him just off of pacesetter Chrisandthecapper. Always In A Tiz is a longshot who is dangerous. The Southwest is a throw out.

Vyjack is just an incredible Aqueduct horse. He'll run his race for sure.
Elnaawi should improve with the change of rider.
Freedom Child adds Lasix.

I believe this will be Normandy Invasion's day.
He is tearing up the barn in the AM and likes the track.
Castellano is asking for trouble taking this mount with Revolutionary already on his plate.

Where do you guys watch your horse racing? I catch the odd Gr.1 from time to time but miss the majority of these races since they aren't on TV, I believe?

Is there a site that streams or something? Would love to catch the Wood Memorial tomorrow.

Edit - Oh, see the title. I don't think we get NBC sports network, or at least that specific channel in Canada

TVG and HRTV are generally regarded as the primary networks available on some cable carriers.

There is a radio channel, from Sirius I think, that broadcasts some races and streams some of the biggest events.

NBC and NBC Sports (two separate channels) air a few races, generally on Saturday's and from approximately March through November.

The first post in this thread has links to many of the major horse racing websites.

This link updates TV schedules from my experiences:

I'm disappointed it wasn't a better run race.
The two outside horses, who figured to contest the pace, both broke poorly.
We're not going to see anything close to a 49 in the Derby.
This makes judging Verrazano's victory difficult at best.

My opinion is that if he was superior to this field, he would've run away and hid off those fractions.
He didn't. In fact, it appeared that he drifted late.

Food for thought for an undefeated horse, who'll probably be the favorite in the Derby.

Noramandy Invasion finished strong, after being boxed most of the way.
Vyjack couldn't continue his rally.

Both Goldencents and Flashback should move forward after excellent efforts.

Johnny V. has a major decision that could impact much of the next few weeks: Orb or Verrazano. If he chooses Orb, would Pletcher turn to Napravnik if she is without an entry. If Borel doesn't have a mount, would he be a consideration for the Derby?

And then comes this bit of news:

Quote:
MANHASSET, N.Y. - Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez fractured a rib on his right side and chipped a bone in his right wrist as a result of being involved in a spill Sunday at Aqueduct.

While Velazquez will not be able to ride Horse of the Year Wise Dan in his seasonal debut in Friday’s Maker’s 46 Mile at Keeneland, Velazquez said he hopes to be back in time to ride the Kentucky Derby.

^ Joel Rosario gets Orb.

Quote:
Orb was bred in Kentucky out of the Unbridled mare Lady Liberty by Stuart S. Janney III and Phipps Stable, and races for those connections and Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey. He has four wins and a third from seven starts with earnings of $921,050, and currently ranks first on the leaderboard for the Kentucky Derby field with 150 points.

Arkansas Derby

This is a weird race to handicap.
It's surprising that they have a 100 pt. race run under allowance conditions.

This means not only will Oxbow be handicapped by the 10 post, he'll will give 4lbs to many of these.
He also loses jockey Mike Smith to Bafferts War Academy. I don't believe he was bumped.
I believe he should get the added distance, but I wouldn't be too confident in his chances.

Overanalyze has speed to rate off the pace. He's dangerous.
War Academy is the inside speed and will be pushed by alot of cheap speed just to his outside. He may be forced to the front.

Carve and Texas Billing are longshot possiblities that should like the added 1/16th.
