Spezza is better defensively than he used to be. When he's actually inside the D zone, he's OK. But, he's still not great and definitely not above average like you say. Many many players are worse offensively than Spezza: they make a living in the NHL by being good defensively and you easily dismiss them and say Spezza is better.

Spezza was truly awful defensively in 2005-06. So bad. Yes worse than Heatley.

As for the Cup run, Spezza and Alfie had the same amount of points but:
-Alfie scored more goals
-Alfie came up big in critical moments
-Alfie did all the heavy lifting defensively on that line

Crosby
Malkin
Datsyuk
Stamkos
Toews
Getzlaf
Kopitar
Zetterberg
Bergeron
Staal
Sedin
Giroux
Tavares
Thornton
Backstrom

That's 15. Spezza fits in with the worst of that group. Top 15 is a good number, any non-Senators fan agrees. You can't call me a troll when I agree with fans who don't constantly have their Sens homer glasses on.

Don't you think that maybe you're overrating him because you're emotionally attached? You're saying that everyone who says Spezza is not a top 10 centre at least (most non-biased NHL fans) are wrong?
top 10, top 15 hell top 5 . . . it's splitting hairs and there are still more then half the teams in the league that would kill to have a player like Spezza.

He's a legit top line center with elite skill and any team in the nhl would benefit from having him. The senators included.

Spezza is garbage.lol. Guy has been in the league for a while and he still makes rookie ****ing mistakes. I call him " Notorious Drop Pass To No One" right now Spezza has 3 rookies showing him up right now and hopefully stealing his job. Spezza is a little whinny ***** who gets injured every year so he has a reason for not putting up the numbers we pay him to put up. Some say he is an elite player. I think he gets lucky goals and he never back checks which is a major part of his job, but he is lazy as **** so what can you expect right. That's my Spezza rant. I hope we trade his ass. We don't need him.
Someone just posted this on one of my friends' facebook. I thought it was MAK. Dear lord.

O how quickly people forget. I dont understand the obsession with selke caliber centers. Its like people have completely forgotten, the objective of the game is to put the puck in the back of the opposing team's net. And thats exactly what forwards are meant to do.

Also, our goalies have been the primary reason why this grinding type of hockey works.

i completely agree. he has always been outstanding offensively and has finally become one of our most dependable defensive forwards not to mention that faceoffs are a HUGE aspect of generating offense off of defense. and for as far as im concerned you need to play defense to be considered a top 15 forward so giroux isnt one. i live in philly and see him play constantly the lack of man coverage around the front of the net by giroux leads to many goals. he, like spezza did, is getting better, but is still a liability.

Spezza was averaging around 2 mins a game on the PK when he was healthy.

The whole 'Spezza is a liability' thing is so 2010.

Spezza's face offs make him a decent defensive center alone. Having him means we don't have to fight for possession in our end because he's going to win that big draw. Thats what defense is: gaining possession. Spezza is a top 5 faceoff guy in the league.

Martin sitting Spezza while letting guys like Todd White play a lot cost us the 2004 playoffs against the Leafs.

I know lots of people here like him but he could not win in the playoffs for ****.

Martin sitting Andre Roy while Domi is having a field day with our Swedes didn't help either. And then we he does dress Spezza he sits Neil, I could have shot him that day, JM drove me crazy.

One of the first times I've agreed with you 100%.

Martin was the main reason for our playoff failures, he and Lalame.

He was fantastic. Until he needed to make a clutch save.

I always give him his due as a coach that can bring a developing and stuggling team to the next level, and he did a great job with the Sens. In the playoffs he was outcoached and is not the guy to get you over the hump - he isn't good with adjusting through a series. Quinn badly outcoached him in that department. Love to see Stacheman with those teams in the playoffs.

Oh man with Maclean as a coach with those late 90s-early 2000s Sens teams we would have one at least a couple cups.

I doubt it. He wouldn't have been playing nets and I seriously doubt that he could have made our best player (Yashin) actually play with some heart when it counted.

How much longer is he expected to be out for? Is he still good for the PO's? What about Michalek? And is Karlsson still good to go for round two and beyond?

Spezza is questionable but hopeful for the playoffs, Michalek hopefully in a couple weeks, and Karlsson was never good to go for the second round. It'd be a minor miracle if we see Karlsson this season, even if we somehow manage to go deep, he can't even run yet.

What's the deal with Spezza? 3 weeks ago he was listed as 2-3 weeks away, and now he's questionable for the playoffs? This guy is the anti-Alfie when it comes to returning from injury.

At this point, other than Anderson, I don't expect any of the injured players to return this season, playoffs included.
