Unless you want Ryder to be Cole 2.0

Last year many were in love with Cole, this year he's a bum

Need you be reminded that Ryder 1.0 ended with pressbox paper airplanes?

Don't compare Ryder before with Ryder now. He has proven that he is a legislate goal scorer while away from the Habs and he continues here and now.

Yes
He's a goal scorer
Unfortunately, he doesn't quite fit the profile of this team.
It seems that Bergevin is building on size and speed.
If you want to sign Ryder you're taking a roster spot away from a young one or he becomes the replacement for that off-season FA that fans want Bergevin to go for.
So, whats your choice?

He's been able to keep up so far. He's actually more consistent than Pacioretty at this point. Would you say Pacioretty doesn't fit our team's profile?

I only question how long he will be able to sustain this level of play

Also, like it or not, if there was a Ryder 1.0, Ryder could always regress to that. IMHO i'd give him a 1 -2 yr deal or it would be a pass.

Can't really afford to lose a guy that's good for 2-3 clear scoring opportunities per game. His production is just another argument in favor of putting ink on the paper.

I'm more impressed with the backchecking he's been doing this year. I really didn't expect to see a more aggressive Ryder without the puck. Not what I'm use to from his old Montreal days and Boston days.

When it comes to signing him, it really depends what is the price.. but with more and more UFA's signing.. Unless Montreal does a trade for a top 6 forward, I think he's a Hab next year.

2 year deal max.

He seems to be getting better with age. He was really good last year too.

Agreed. I wouldn't commit long term like 3-4 years on him. 2 years gives flexibility because lets just say he slows down in year 2 we could just let him go or try and trade him as a rental

I wouldn't sign him long term but 2 maybe 3 years. He fills a need as a pure goal scorer and he has rounded out his game to be at least serviceable in defensive situations.

I really don't understand how anyone could not want the guy? He is clutch and has do e nothing but help the Habs since being here. Probably a top 3 free agent this off season.

Even if he does regress to Ryder 1.0 as you call it, that is still a Ryder food for 20-30 goals.

I'd love him back for another 2-3 years. He might not be the most complete player out there but he's more well rounded than he was the first time around, and is extremely efficient.

Well, he has been back-checking. So he's not uni-dimensional anymore.

Ryder's been getting better each year. Won't hurt one bit to re-sign him to a three year deal. We need a sniper like him on the team.

I'm curious to know your line of thought here...

So because Cole was depressed by the lock-out, thought about retiring, and overall wasn't happy in Montréal anymore and didn't play the way he should have, Ryder will have the same faith if we extend him?

What kind of logic is that?

I'd take Ryder for 2 more years at anything under 4,5M with open arms. If not him in the top 6, then who?

Depends on the cost. Wouldn't dish out major money for him; view him more as a great secondary scoring player.

Ryder has been doing this for years, last year was Cole's best season in his 30's. It was the anomaly here. Erik Cole is not a 30 goal scorer, I guess now, technically he is, but it was a one off, he 30 once many moons ago. Ryder scores 30 in his sleep, he's done it 6 times with 2 seasons of 25 goals or more. Him and Erik Cole aren't in the same boat.

When the trade was made I kind of half jokingly stated that Ryder would out-produce Cole 2-1, looks like it might be worse than first thought. lol

Ryder has 2x 30 goal seasons with us, and a 35 with the stars
At his age I would be leary to sign him at more than 2 years and that REALLY depends on the price. That being said we are in the midst of a youth movement and I'd rather give the spot to someone younger.
Bourque is still under contract, what do you do with him?
It's not as easy as some make it sound with the cap going down and some youth needing to be served.
For this year I couldn't be happier, not sure about moving forward

For a 3 year deal, definitely. It won't be easy to just replace his production by promoting a young player or signing another UFA.

I'm the first to admit that I was wrong about the Cole vs Ryder trade. Initially, I was unhappy primarily because I preferred Cole's style of play instead of Ryder's. However, Ryder has truly impressed me thus far. In my opinion, he's earned the right to negotiate an extension with this team.

However, we must remember that Marc Bergevin stated that he traded Cole due to the length of his contract and for cap space reasons. Therefore, it would be difficult to envision Marc resigning him for a period of 3 years around 4 mil per season. With the cap going down, and with impending contract extensions for Subban & other young players, it will be tricky.

Still, I believe a 2 year contract at 4 mil would be a fair deal. I would find a way to make it happen.

Ryder has been great here. He's PPG player here (yes it's only a 14 games) and defensively responsible.... what more do you want? He works well with Pleks and that's worth something. The Habs teams he played on were arguably the worst in our history and he still scored 30 .
