Nate Schmidt (Update 4/2/13: Signed with Washington)

http://www.redlinereport.com/wp-cont...College-FA.pdf

This scouting report describes him very well, only saw him a few times but is an excellent power play quarterback... He kind of reminds me of subban

#2 prospect on the list

We were talking about him in the Speculation thread

He's rumored to not want to play in Minnesota and has been scouted a good bit by the Flyers

We should go all in for him and Hartzell

Holmgren is also an alum from the Univ. of Minn so hopefully that helps us.

I honestly think he would be a second pairing guy on this team right now, as well as qb on second power play...not saying much since of the obvious lack of blue line depth we have, but it's not to take away anything from him.

From everything I've read the last few days, he's similar to Justin Schultz but with a better shot and better defense. He could step in right away and be an offensive D man, but he's still raw so it would probably be best for a year or two in the AHL

edit : When did we add the Player Discussion tag?

There was a guy on the trade rumours board saying that the Homer and the scouts have been paying a lot of attention to him throughout the season. Maybe this will sway it. Never seen him play, but by all reports, he'd probably been a big improvement on what is playing now.

If we could grab him, that would be amazing.

Going for all the UFA out of the NCAA? I'm all in. I mean, it did work in 1980.

Read has panned out. Gus hasn't been a bust yet. I have faith in Homer finding good college/undrafted players.

I highly doubt he has a better shot than Schultz.

I'm not sure if they're maxed out on contracts right now. According to Capgeek.com, they are at 52 contracts, but if you subtract Cousins, Laughton, and Stolarz (they're on their Entry Level contracts and they slide), then there's 49 contracts. I'm not sure where Mathers fits in (not sure if he's considered contracted now that he's playing for Adirondack or if he's playing on an ATO). If he's on an ATO, then it's actually 48 contracts.

He's on an ATO as is Flanagan.

Good to know. I'm wondering if they can get Schmidt to sign and then sign Alt to an ATO and get him into Adirondack for a few games. Maybe give Murray a chance to see what work Alt will need to make it at the next level.....

do NCAA FA forwards tend to have more success than defenseman do?

It would be nice to see all of these young guys playing together with the Phantoms including Laughton (if he isnt with the flyers) and cousins. Having them all grow together and having some promising talent in the AHL would be nice. Sprinkle a few veteran players in Adirondack with them to help teach them to be pros

There's more notable NCAA FA forwards than defensemen in the NHL right now.

That's what This Providence said and a few other reports said.

I invited This Providence to come post a bit of a scouting report here

I haven't seen a whole lot of Schmidt but Schultz has one of the best wristers (as far as defenseman go) in the league. Give him time in the slot and its a goal. He doesn't use his clapper much which might be why it seems like he doesn't have a great shot.

I've read his shot isn't a cannon but accurate and good at getting it through from the point

PLEASE get him under contract!!! I really wanted the Flyers to pursue Dekeyser and Sustr, so getting Schmidt would not be a bad consolation prize. He could end up being the best of the 3, the other two getting alot more hype.

We have such a lack of talent on the blueline that they can offer Schmidt immediate NHL playing time. TBL did it with JT Brown last year and Sustr is already in the lineup this year. We have nothing to lose by getting him signed and playing this year. If he needs more time to develop after that then he can start next season with the Phantoms.

I'm also tired of the Flyers not going hard after these FAs from the NCAA. It seems like it is always the usual suspects when it comes to the teams in the mix for the big NCAA players: Minnesota, Vancouver, Detroit and Tampa. I'm sure alot of that has to do with the location of the teams in relation to where these players are attending school and growing up(Minnesota area) but come on, do your homework and put in the extra time to get these guys.

Schmidt if signed, would likely play right away for flyers given our lack of defenseman, I also agree that he could turn out better than dekeyser... He's not as polished but I like his style and game better, and has a higher offensive upside IMO

Seriously, our prospect-pool for the defence is talent-wise a disgreace.

SIGN HIM.
