The end of Ryder 1.0 wasn't even that bad. His PP time was cut by 2 minutes per game and he was playing on the 2nd unit, despite being our best PP guy for years. IIRC, he had like 17 or 18 goals on the PP in the two seasons before, and his last year, he had 1.

His ES production was basically the same it had always been.

FYI: There's already a general Ryder thread on here. I only know 'cause I made it.

Given that Perry, Iginla, and Semin are no longer options (if they ever were) - Yes, resign him. He had 35 goals for Dallas last year, and he's scoring at a PPG clip for us, for crying out loud. It usually takes years to replace that sort of offense from within your team's own prospect system.

Just keep the deal reasonably short (so there's less risk of him dogging it), and we're set.

He turned from just a sniper into one hell of a solid hockey player. He's a pretty complete player now. Of course, he's better on offense than on defense, but he's at least adequate everywhere.

Then again maybe there's a bit of Plekamagic under that, but hey. I like his play.

as it stands now, i'm not opposed to another year, maybe 2. if he'd sign a 1 year, i'd do that, but i don't think he'd look for less than 2. let's see how things go in the playoffs.

He's definitely producing, been very dangerous... but his nonchalance defensively has been prominent. He's prone to lazy/careless plays. He's not a bad two-way player, but he's definitely not a great one.

He turns 33 tomorrow, and will likely want some term and more money than he's worth.

If he's >4 million @ 1-2 years then sure! Otherwise I think with the reduced cap you can spend that money more wisely.

edit - Actually one a 1 year deal I'm fine with a bit more money spent. He'd be great with a bunch of OZ starts and PP time.

Secondary? Really? He's leading the team in goals. Had 35 last year. Has three other years of 30 goals. You see anyone on this team that will score more than that?

If utilized properly Ryder is a primary goal scorer. And seeing his defensive game has come round he's a bargain at 3.5 even at 4.5.

It's not as easy as some make it sound with the cap going down and some youth needing to be served.
I'd rather keep Ryder than Gionta. If you need to move anyone next Next year you move Ryder to right wing and return Bourque to left. Trade Gionta if you have make room

I'm pretty sure he's going to be looking for a 4 year deal at 4 per, he's playing his way out of our price/term range.

Yeah but he's 33 and the likelihood of him keeping that up isn't great.

that being said:
Goal paces over 82GP this year:
Subban: 29
Plekanec: 31
Gallagher: 30
Pacioretty: 24.5 (33 last year)
Gionta: 24
Bourque (smaller sample: ) 24.
And yes
Ryder: 41.

im dumb. ryder is 41 in 82 with his 14 gp as a hab. 32 on the whole. still tops!

Bergevin should sign him cause the UFA pool is weak. Guy is working well with Plekanec

If they're able to get rid of Gionta then absolutely sign Ryder... but otherwise having 9 million+ in those two forwards isn't ideal.

Gionta has 1 year left so with Kaberle being one in the summer thats were the money goes for next year. After hat Gionta is gone and we still have Ryder

Also, like it or not, if there was a Ryder 1.0, Ryder could always regress to that. IMHO i'd give him a 1 -2 yr deal or it would be a pass.
Ryder has been 2nd guessed his entire career but every year he proved everybody wrong. He'd probably be looking for a 3+ yrs contract but we shouldnt offer more than 2 yrs.

What makes you think that 2 or 3 more years will detract from his game? It's not like he plays a physical game or a speed game. He relies on his shot and smart positioning. Unless he gets seriously injured I can see Ryder getting 25 goals or more every year until his late 30s.

Gionta's salary is irrelevant to Ryder re-signing the way I see it. We have plenty of cap room for next year once Kaberle is bought out. Then Gionta expires next summer.

10 mills/2 years. Take it or leave it?
This far he's been absolutely great. And it's not just a contract year, he has been at his best for 1,5 years now. Everyone knows the risk that comes with Ryder, him turning into 30 point man, but with short contract the risk is very manageable. We found taker for Cole and will find one for a man with even better numbers if the time comes.

He will receive rather lucrative contract as UFA, act now.

You'd think he'd be willing to re-sign for the same deal - 2 years, 3.5mil/yr - given that he's two years older and the cap will be lower.

Agreed, do it. We have the cap space, guys, and I honestly don't know what else is out there this Summer that's going to be significantly more attractive.
