I know we signed him, but i was thinking why he haven`t played a game yet. Should have asked in Ads thread, sorry.

The question isn't whether we can use him on the PP. It's whether he brings enough overall.

When the NHL adopts a DH type rule where time is called between possessions and you can freely substitute your point man before the teams go the other way, then we can use him as a PP specialist. Until then he does not belong here.

If there is no possible way of Vatanen becoming an NHL player why not trade him for a 7th round pick? There are teams thin on offensive d prospects that would definitely do the trade.

Huh? Vatanen is going to be an NHL player. You guys just need to be more patient. And even if he isn't going to make it to the NHL...a 7th round pick is awful value

BTW...Vatanen scored tonight

Eddie isn't saying Vatanen isn't going to be an NHL player, from what I can see. He's saying he's not ready right now. There is a significant difference.

He isn't saying when Vatanen will improve his defense he could be playing in the NHL. He is saying when there becomes some rediculous rule changes he could be used as a PP specialist. There is the significant difference to what you are saying.

That's called hyperbole. It was an exaggeration meant to show that Vatanen doesn't belong right now, because he can't be relied on defensively. You're taking him too literally.

Vatanen improving his defense is assumed. He's a talented prospect, and his coach has already said he's improving. Whether or not he improves enough to be a valid NHL player is another matter. Who knows? I think he will.

Thank you Sojourn for restating what I thought was the obvious. I was responding to the comment that we could use him on the PP now. I used hyperbole to state he clearly is not ready now to be trusted, now.

I've never really understood the "niche" philosophy. How many players do we see in the NHL who are strict PP specialists? With such limited roster space, teams can't afford to have players who are worthless outside of a very specific, very limited role.

Furthermore, is that really going to help Vatanen develop?

"Hey kid, we want you to improve your defensive game... but in the meantime we're going to give you 4 minutes a game of PP time, and bench you the rest of the game. I hope you learn by osmosis."

Sadly though, that logic doesn't seem to stop people here from continuing to suggest we call him up to help the PP.

When he can be a positive and contributing member of the team at even strength, as well as on the PP, we can call him up.

41 save shutout for Andersen in a 2-0 Ads win tonight. Didn't watch the game, but seems like he had a hell of a game.

Vatanen scores again, he's really getting a hang for the NA game, at least offensively.

People shouldn't get too carried away with Andersen's save percentage. That wouldn't transfer over to the pro level just yet. He's getting better though, but I'm hoping that if Murray moves someone for his sake, it's after he steals a job at training camp.

I don't think anyone said we're good with Andersen, time to make some moves.

Oh, really? I've seen plenty of people mention that we should move Hiller this summer, hell, just a few weeks ago, a few were saying that we should move him immediately.

...And now we should move Fasth.

Admirals just two points out now. They've got a chance, damn it.

A fools hope. They have a very tough schedule to close out the season. Hopefully they make it though, our youngins need the experience

For some reason, Teemu's name comes to mind. But he's a special specialist!

Well your post seemed reactionary to this specific thread. Your intent wasn't exactly clear. But whatever. yeah you're right. There's no reason to trade either goalie because Andersen is doing well.

Vats is coming around. Can't wait to see him in training camp next year competing with Lindholm. He's going to help this PP sooo much once he figures out how to defend NHL players

That's true, but you have to wonder what Bob is thinking having signed Fasth to a contract that is definitely not back up money. It's very unlike the Ducks to have $7M committed to goal next year if one of them doesn't leave.

Special teams is a major part of the game, you find a way to make room and give him more than a couple games before deciding his fate. our current bottom pairing types have holes in their games to, so why do they get precedent over him?

Vatanen's current issues are not at the same level as those players. Being flawed doesn't mean that they are equally flawed.
