This is why Vatanen will be an NHL player someday guaranteed. You can just tell he's going to be an excellent player on the PP. He's fast, moves the puck quickly, has good vision, and has a nice slap shot. I can't wait to see him blasting from the point and Fowler roaming two years from now. Super pumped for what he's going to do for our power play. I bet he makes the team next year and gets first unit PP time, and 3rd pairing ES time. Lydman will be gone most likely, and I can see Allen/Sbisa traded at the draft to make room for Vats/Lindholm

His PP skills make up for some of his flaws. I agree though, he needs to spend the rest of the year in the AHL. Next year is his chance to make the team.

Because flaws and all, the current bottom pairing guys are light years ahead of Sami when it comes to playing defense. Special teams must be provided by guys who can already play even strength. Sami can't at this point in time. But considering your changed user name this is really a pointless conversation.

Yeah, that's the Devo we thought we were getting after he signed. If he had played like that earlier in the year he might be here now.

I just wodered if he could get a call up if he is playing much better now - getting points etc. Can`t say about his overall physicality but in that play the guy who tried to get the open hit on Devo barely even moved him but ended up horrizontally against the boards
Amazing.

But i ended up realizing we have so many bottom 6 wingers that Devo will see hard time getting back his Anaheim spot this season.
However, he should be better next season. Should be out of his sophomore slump and won`t expect a spot in Anaheim like he did coming into this season.

Yeah, that hit in the video is what I was led to believe his game was all about when we first drafted him. But we saw very little of that last year here in ANA and from all reports his earlier stint with the Ads, this year, wasn't much better. But here's to hoping he learned and is now doing all the right things to get him back here next year.

He`s still 20 (or 21?), and no matter how big he looks, it is hard for him to play against men. His phisicality should come in soon (hopefully)

And yeah, i believe that is what we drafted him for so we`ll see in next few seasons what he`s got.

+1. That's what we all thought we'd be getting, a massive destructive power forward with a bumper sticker that says, "Wrecking Ball Machine. Tell us how we're doing. Call 1 -877- GoDucks."

We need that grit right now, in fact. But it's needed on every shift Devo's on the ice though.

Kevin Gagne got knocked out of the Q playoffs. He's probably gonna join the Admirals soon.

that was a nice hit. wow. if he plays like that consistently, we'd carve out a spot for him in our lineup.

Now that I have upgraded my internet, does anybody know if there are any free feeds of Ads games? Thanks.

Since the NHL started there haven't been any admirals games that I know of. I have bought the occasional AHL live feed, luckily the connections there seem to be in better shape now that NHL is on. (still you don't need the worlds fastest internet connections to watch those feeds as the quality of the stream is far from HD).

I was thinking of earlier discussion about Vatanen and started to think what is Vatanen really worth now-a-days. It seems to me he is somewhere in the top 20 defensemen taken in the 2009 draft. Might be as high as 13th best D-man of his draft (actually Mat Clark was the 13th defenseman picked in 2009). That would make Vatanen's worth as high as an early second pick if we assume all drafts equal. Would you be willing to trade him for that kind of value considering that an early second could bring a more safe D-pick than Vatanen who still is a boom bust type of prospect, or do you think it is best for Anaheim to see if he has it in him to improve his defense to the NHL level?

You keep Vatanen. This draft is still a gamble, no matter how stacked it is. Even in 2003 there were losers. Not to mention that you'd have to wait a few years for that player to even reach the point that Sami is at now.

Thanks. Sorry to hear about the quality. The low quality ones are pretty bad from some highlights I've seen. Don't think I want to pay for 2.5 hours of that. Maybe somebody else will know of a free feed?

I wouldn't make it a priority to try and trade Sami, but as I've said about many others, if the right deal comes along that helps the team he certainly isn't untouchable from my view.

Agreed with ED, you keep him for that offer. While Vatanen's still a question mark, (even more)so is even the safest of picks you get with second round pick. Vatanen's actually a significantly safer bet to become at least a 3rd pairing PP specialist than a 2nd round pick is to become an NHLer of similar capacity. At this point, at least. If there's some guy falling like crazy that our scouts believe in, things can change, but realistically you have to keep him. And there's no reason to make that sound like it's a tough fate we have to keep the highly skilled young puckmoving defenseman that shockingly takes exactly the type of time to develop that we had to expect, and that most did.

A Keeper

Right now I'd keep Vatanen. He has a wicked shot and can carry the puck with the best.

He just needs to learn the defensive side of the game. He gets out of position and his lack of size doesn't allow him to overpower the opponent. That being said I have seen more of a physical streak in him lately. He needs a strength and conditioning program in the offseason to add some muscle. Working under Yawney's tutelage will teach him the defensive side of things.

He's not that far away.

Haha funny. Hard to play like that when you play 4 mins a game. Its okay...we are very happy to have him here in norfolk. You have the superstar stabitz so looks like you don't need a player like devo hahaha. And now that the cancers are gone from the room down here....the ads are a way better team and he is a huge reason why. Guarantee you swap maroon/dsp with holland/etem and the ads season would be over and no way do they get back into this race.
Good luck in the playoffs with your 3 line team and that goaltending!

Doesn't look like the other young guns have had issues getting more than 4 minutes a game, so it's hard to build a case against anyone but DSP there.

Well, Staubitz is there to play those "4 minutes" a night to not be a superstar and with no expectation of long-term development as a result of those limited minutes. It just makes sense. For Staubitz, and for DSP.

Well, we used to be a one-line team with half goaltending, so that's quite some improvement, I suppose.

Kid hockey fan, trolling parent team NHL fan, when his team is not even in playoff position? I have now seen it all. God Bless HFBoards!

Bonis

Watched him for 2 games. He has some promise here. Plays with a lot of poise. May want to get him signed in some capacity (AHL or NHL deal).
