I for one would prefer to not see so many thread merges.

It makes topics unreadable and very difficult to follow. Quite often those monster threads go offtopic as well.

I feel that if a thread has merit it will be posted in. If it does not or people have no interest in the thread, it will fall off the main page all on its own.

Being around the internet since its early days, I can assure you that a community can police itself pretty well by deciding what threads are worth posting in.

I support the idea of having merged threads, when i joined in the 10-11 season (aka when the fan hit the ****, as we say) there were threads all over the place about everyone and dozens of Crosby threads.

It was really quite annoying and it cluttered the board. The argument about merge threads making the specific topics unreadable is really not valid since there's the quote button, which is readily used.

I get your point but I don't agree at all. Organization is nice, chaos not so much.

Edit: An idea would be (since the thread title is updated with the minimum need to know info) to have continiously have an short summary in the first post about the players injured that's kept á jour

I tend to agree with the OP. I'm appreciative of the work that the mods do, but often times I feel like they overreach by merging/moving/shutting down threads. I don't mean for this to be a wholesale condemnation of the mods, but it is a bit of constructive feedback that I would give. A good example would be the injury thread...if I want to get a low-down on the latest with Martin, Letang, and Crosby, I have to peruse 30+ pages of posts. Would it be so blasphemous to have threads stickied for each of our injured players? I would like to see a "Crosby Injury" thread that has the 1st post updated every so often with the latest official word, along with one for Martin and Letang.

Same here, I think the mods do a pretty good job keeping the threads straight. The merging also deems to deter, to some extent, 80 threads about a trade or what not.

This stems from the injury thread. I wouldn't mind one injury thread per player. The same way I don't mind one acquisition thread per player. Definitely not a game-breaker, but easier to find info of interest.

Obviously if threads are being started about the exact same topic, they should be merged. With that said, I think there is over-active thread merging nonetheless. Here's another example...the other day, I started a "Bob Errey appreciation thread." I think it was different than the ongoing "Errey Sayings" thread, where people basically just share various quotes said by Bob during the game. I was hoping to encourage an actual discussion with regards to his hockey knowledge and whether he's a good color guy. There's definitely an argument to be made that those threads could be merged, but I personally would have allowed those threads to coexist. Just my $0.02.

If we stop merging redundant threads this board will be unbearable. We do not need three threads on Crosby's teeth or the Iginla deal.

That's not the point. The idea is one thread for Crosby's teeth, another for Letangs toe, etc. As opposed to one thread for all injuries or one thread for all trades.

Each trade does have it's own thread and there isn't THAT much going on in the injury thread.

the OP's thread speculating that a close study of the acquisitions from prior cup years reveals a discernible regularity in the world wherein the acquisition of another team's captain guarantees a cup win is an example of the type of truly vapid and insipid threads that would crop up and strangle the very readability of this board if it weren't for the ever-vigilant eyes of our beloved mods.

So right now there would be a thread for...

Sid's Teeth
Geno's Shoulder
MAF Head
Letang's foot
Martin's hand

Oh yeah that sounds like a great idea. Let's just make the entire first half of the first page about injuries.

The injury thread is slow. No need to have 5 seperate injury threads. There are what 20-30 posts a day on the injury thread.

It becomes too much if there is no merging. We get a thread on Crosby's teeth than we get a thread on is it possible Crosby has a concussion. It becomes too much.

There are 30 threads on the front page, not including stickies. Why not just sticky each injury then unsticky when they come back?

I think it's fine.

I loved previous years injury thread by duck paddy where he took ownership of it and updated the first post so you could go there for the news. Otherwise you have to sort through too much angst to get to an update. Mainly I think if everyone would just calm down it would be more useful.

That would be optimal, but one thread for each would require less moderator maintenance.

Now that there's a high-profile injury and it's things move quickly, the first page of the injury thread will be updated with the latest on each player.

We don't have an individual thread for each injury because the minor ones would too often get lost in the shuffle, especially during a busy period like this one where it would quickly fall off the first page. Yes, Paul Martin's injury is serious, but there really aren't any updates on a broken hand/wrist to give after today's update on him. By keeping him in the title (and now updated in the first post) of a dedicated injury thread, it won't disappear.

We appreciate suggestions to improve the board. We just ask people to keep in mind that things can and will fall through the cracks, and we appreciate your patience.

Who says that every one of those threads would be constantly bumped? And even if they are so what? That means people are interested in discussing it.

Bottom line is, if a thread is so 'insipid and vapid' then nobody will post in it and it will fall.

Do we need 3 threads on Crosbys teeth? No.
But it would be nice if it was allowed to have its own thread.

Popular threads will rise on their own. Unpopular threads will fall on their own. This has been proven. So what is the problem? Why not let threads stand on their own merit.

Stickies are another issue.
Imo we do not need a dozen stickied threads. Once again, a thread will stay at the top all on its own merit if its worthy. if its not it will fall.

I don't see the need for so many stickies either.

Merge the Pittsburgh and Allegheny threads together. Merge the Beer and Nightlife with the OT thread too.

Crosby's jaw deserves its own thread at the very least because there will be an insane amount of speculation and talk over the next month or so

No need to merge them, just unsticky them. If people want to post in them they will, if not they will fall off main page on their own

Thanks for the feedback guys. For my part I tend to merge threads when someone is clealry not paying attention to which threads currently exist and what's being discussed in them, and generates a new thread talking about the exact same things going on in existing threads. That's not helpful to anyone.

And at some point we have to make judgement calls about "different enough". Frankly the catch-all injury thread (as long as people don't start talking about line combinations and individual awards and other OT stuff) is a perfect example of why one thread works better than 3. There's no reason to have a thread about Martin's toe and Letang's toe and Sid's jaw, etc because the official updates are pretty infrequent. So what ends up happening is you get a flury of activity talking about one guy for a day or two, then that dies down and people start talking about the other guy. Having this in one thread helps the mods to keep track of things easier and it helps with server loads too most likely.
