Nick Bjugstad signing?

With the Gophers out, does Florida plan to get him playing time? Is he even going to sign a contract this year?

I think heard he was going to sign, but I don't know about having the ELC signed to finish off the rest of this season.

Lots of speculation, I hope he turns pro - for Florida's sake.

Would he be entering his senior year if he went back to Minnesota?

Yep.

For the Gophers' sake I hope he stays in school. This is one of the better rosters they've had to work with in a long, long time.

Word from our beat writer is that he expects Bjugstad, and surprisingly Michael Matheson, to sign and play this year with us.. But who knows.

Signing Michael Matheson at this point, would be a mistake IMO. He had a very good freshman season, but he should stay at BC for at least another year.

Agreed, pretty sure Bjugstad is ready though. Wouldnt mind them only giving Matheson a few games just to get a look w/o burning a year of his elc. But will he be old enough next year to play in the ahl?

Wish he would wait and sign with the Habs. He is my favorite prospect. Complete in all areas.

Not an issue with guys in college. They can sign and be sent down, as soon as they sign their NCAA eligibility is gone.

He was drafted out of the USHL so, technically, he could have signed a contract right after the draft and played in the AHL this year (a la Girgensons). I believe the age cutoff for playing in the AHL, for a player not drafted out of the CHL, is 18 by September 15th of the year they're going to be playing in the AHL - which Matheson would have met.

Agreed that Bjugstad is ready. Will be interesting to see what he does and how he's handled.

Pretty sure he doesn't qualify for the Shultz loophole

Wouldnt he though? A junior can leave college and sign a pro contract with whatever team.

Don't know how the situation would be different. I may be wrong though.

No Bjugstad would have to pull the Wheeler move where he graduates first, he was in college right away if I remember correctly. Would have to go back his senior year and wait until July 1 of next year. Schultz played a year in the BCHL (maybe two) which is why he could do that after his junior season.

To the earlier one the AHL rule is about CHL players. Tatar is another guy that simply never reported to his OHL draft team and turned pro in the AHL right away with the Wings as an 18 year old.

I'm sure 29 other fan bases would love to see Bjugstad sign with their favorite team. However, he is probably still Panthers property.

Bjug needs to go pro. He has nothing left to learn or develop at the collegiate level. He has even regressed a tad from last year in what I have seen of him.

Or maybe him and Kyle Rau could go back to school, Bjugstad and Nate Schmidt sign somewhere together July 1st, 2014 and Rau comes over next year.

He could learn to show up in key games and situations. Honestly, him and Rau were being spoonfed minutes and nice passes in the losses to CC and Yale and never capitalized. They looked sloppy, and it really brought the team down.
