LA's 1st round pick (CBJ own)

with the lowly Blue Jackets now in 8th place and actually pushing for a playoff spot, what/who is available that the CBJ could get by Wednesday for said pick? Looking for a scoring winger not necc on an expiring contract...

edit: only looking at the LA pick, not ours or NYR's

Columbus shouldn't trade any of their 1st's imo. They are still right on the border for the playoffs, and with how tight things are in the West, they are not guaranteed to stay up. If they make it, good; if not, that gives them a shot at the 1st overall.

Not to mention the BJ's have a shiny new GM who actually knows what to do with those 1st's and add should some good, young assets to the team.

Flames offer Cammalleri or Stempniak + 4th.

Keep the pick, the type of player you would get for it would either have major blemishes in their game or a bad contract. It's a sellers market and while Columbus has made strides, they are not ready to compete. The Jackets should use that pick to try and move-up in the draft if a player they want falls

I don't think there's a decent deal for the pick alone.

I'd want to see them package the pick to move up at the draft or secure a young forward.

We shouldn't trade it.

$2m retained in cap hit would be necessary to get that deal done, because otherwise we'd have some potentially significant cap worries next year (Bob is likely going to get paid). It also doesn't exactly help that that's a backloaded contract.

See above re: Cammalleri. Stempniak, despite a nice season so far, really isn't of substantial interest; he's basically more of what we already have.

All that is left is to cheer against the Kings so their pick is good. Shouldn't be too hard, lets think back to the last LA pick the Stars had and what the Kings did...uh-oh

No chance in hell CBJ moves any of their 1sts in my opinion.

Columbus has a good thing going.

The fighting chance of a playoff spot alone should generate some buzz for the team and build confidence for next year...The cap situation looks good from an outsider's perspective, even with the impending free agents...It's a young team that has had a lot of shake-up in the past 2 seasons, so next year's full season should further develop the youngsters and the team chemistry...And the Eastern Conference placement might even help attract free agents with the lighter travel schedule.

Given that this was originally a conditional pick for either this year or last year and originally looked to be a mid-rounder (with guys jokingly predicting that LA would win the Cup "because that's the only way Columbus could get screwed even more in the draft")... yeah.

Honestly, in the final accounting I don't think we're trading any of the 1sts, and generally I wouldn't want to. (I just kind of like Derek Roy in particular, personally; I think he'd be a very good fit. That said, it arguably makes more sense to wait 'till the offseason...)

Agreed... CBJs are in no way on a cup run... any playoff hopes will be a bonus. Best to draft a winner since Columbus is not the preferred destination for players. I like where their team is headed.

I can see the Blue Jackets moving the LA 1st.

While I also agree with those that say "Keep the pick", I also think that both the actual chase for a PO berth is extremely important for a growing team, as well as seeing management do what they can (within reason) to help them along in the process.

If you can add a Derek Roy for the LA 1st, I believe it's a deal you HAVE to consider.

This is not a team selling it's soul for a one shot deal.

with three 1st's in the back pocket, I believe management is obligated to do all that it can to give the team the best shot at a PO berth.

Personally speaking of course, if you are going to give up a pick in the 1st round, you should look to get more than just a PO run from that player. I would look to get a player that can help you this year and next.

Hope the Blue Jackets make the PO's.

Good Luck

Dont think Columbus is at the point they can be sacrificing first round picks. They are rebuilding and w/o Johansen, their prospect pool isn't very good.

CBJ in a playoff position is a bit of an illusion at the moment. They have played the most games in the conference and are 1 pt clear at the moment. I would love to see them make the playoffs but trading picks at this point would be foolish. This team needs skill and more depth. Trading even a late first for anything but a long term piece would be MacLeanish and continue to keep this a midling franchise at best.

Stick with the plan, add picks and prospect depth. Maybe they don't move that many pieces at the deadlien to give this team a chance but don't move any of the picks. I think that would be a mistake.
