Malkin will sign an eight year 8.7mil per. No one on PIT will make more than Crosby.

whatever he wants pretty much

really doubt he goes to any NHL team other than Pittsburgh

I doubt it happens but the KHL could be a dark horse

Crosbys camp is already well aware that because of the contract limitations his cap hit is expected to be more. It's more than likely his contract will match the first 8 years of sids contract.

This is what will make this years draft interesting. Would Pittsburgh talk about trading Malkin to a team in the top 4.

I could actually see Malkin on the Rangers, but not until after his next contract.

So 8 years, 86.4 mil (10.8 per)? Sounds about right, maybe even a bit of a discount vs hitting the open market.

Sadly that's the rep the Rangers got. Signing players past there prime.

The only way someone signs for that is if they don't want to win. A competitive team is very hard to build when someone is eating up a huge chunk of the cap.

I just have a feeling that if the Penguins can't sign him this offseason they will trade him before next season starts to maximize a return. They could easily get a #2 center and a #2 D for Malkin, maybe even more and I think that might even make the Penguins a better team.

I hope he leaves. It would be better for the league if he was in NYC, Detroit, Boston Montreal, Toronto etc... Besides Pens fans, no one wants to see the two best players in the world on the same team. It would be more exciting seeing them compete against each other, especially in the playoffs.

As much as I wish cap hell on the Penguins, I see Malkin going full "Good Guy Geno" and signing for $8.7.

Letang will get a big raise, but Shero will make it work

Its not that ......

The issue is with the cap.

I think it will kill teams long term if they tie more than 25% of their cap space in 2 forwards.

Then you also have Letang to resign too.

This is why I talk of them looking to deal him to a team with a top 4 pick where they can draft a future Center to replace him.

If he reached the open market I could see him getting 7 yrs, 11M+.

honestly, very few teams at that time could afford him. Most teams either would be up against their own cap ceilings with a slew of RFAs, or teams that have self-imposed caps that won't come any where near Malkin's price.

So it's probably down to the a few usual suspects.

Numerous teams are going to throw max contracts his way. I don't see him leaving Pit though.

It's a bit misleading to look just the caphit. Total earnings is what matters in players mind.

Crosby is earning 83.4 million in those 8 years (from 2014-15 to 2021-22), when Malkin should sign that maximum length 8-year contract. That means 10.425 million yearly earnings (without any fake cap hit) if he takes the same than Sidney.

^^ this. My guess is he'll likely sign for a tad less (9.5-10m cap hit).

Sid's likely giving up salary in the last three years of his deal though. No one seems to take into account that there's a difference between frontloading a deal and tacking on years he won't play to the end of his contract. He'll be making 3 mil a year for 3 years in his mid 30s when he will likely still be a first line centre and worth big money for the name recognition alone. That money he's giving up is money that he could have earned signing a new contract for those three years. Let's say he's worth about 7 at the time, then he's giving up 12 mil in those three years or a million a season which would have to be taken off his first 9 years in order to truly look at the numbers. So that's putting it closer to 9.5 mil.

Destined to be a Red Wing! Fedorov > Datsyuk > Malkin. Remember who said it first!

IF Datsyuk leaves for the KHL after next year, and IF Malkin hits free agency...it's happening concurrently.
