Looking at Boston's cap space for next year. They have 7 million but that's with only 17 players signed.

If Clowe is allegedly going to be signed by whoever picks him up, would Boston even have the cap space? Horton's a UFA. Rask needs to be signed. Those 2 alone would take them right close to the cap. Ference is a UFA too.

I really don't want Clowe to go to the Bs so I really hope the him signing an extension rumour is true.

Edit: I guess they'll be able to buy out Savard's contract but even still.

Sharks fans are pretty unanimous on Clowe playing a lot better since coming back from injury. Let's get him!

Plus quite a few Bs fans seem pretty scared of us getting Clowe. Come on MB!!!

My wish list :

A) A gritty bottom line player, who can also chip one goal in once in a while.

1- Raffi Torres (PHO, will be UFA this summer)
2- Maxime Talbot (PHI, signed 3 more years at 1,75M$, upgrade over Armstrong)
3- Chuck Kobasew (COL, will be UFA this summer)
4- Ruslan Fedotenko (PHI, he doesn't really fit the description, but he proved in the past that he's a playoffs performer)
5- Eric Nystrom (DAL, UFA this summer)
6- Ryane Clowe (SJ, but I don't think the expected overpayment will be worth it)

B) A veteran defenseman, #6 or 7, who's there mostly in case of an injury.

1- Robyn Regehr (BUF, will be UFA this summer)
2- Ladislav Smid (EDM, UFA this summer)
3- Derek Morris (PHO, another year left to his contract at 2,75M$)
4- Scott Hannan (NSH, as a 7th defenseman only, UFA this summer)
5- Mark Fistric (EDM, UFA this summer)

Rentals or players acquired at the deadline rarely are key players in a Stanley Cup run, but I think it benefits to all the team, especially to the youngsters, to surround the team with more veterans. And we all know that playoffs are often the veterans game.

Most of the last Stanley Cup winners acquired new players at the deadline :

2012 LA Kings : Jeff Carter
2011 Boston Bruins : Rich Peverley, Chris Kelly, Tomas Kaberle
2010 Chicago Blackhawks : Nick Boynton, Kim Johnsson
2009 Pittsburgh Penguins : Chris Kunitz, Bill Guerin, Philippe Boucher, Craig Adams
2008 Detroit Red Wings : Brad Stuart
2007 Anaheim Ducks : Richard Jackman, Brad May, George Parros
---
1993 Montreal Canadiens : Gary Leeman, Rob Ramage

Informed opinion on Clowe seems polarized between him being a total idiot and useless, versus being that character guy who could be a power forward.

Can anyone track down where the idea of getting him originated? Was it credible chatter from within the media, or is it just our fan base fixating on this guy and not letting go? Is Clowe a real possibility or just some of our fans' wet dream?

I would really like to add Kobasew, he's great on the PK has pretty good speed and he plays with sand paper.

As for Smid he's a top pairing defenseman and one of the top defensive defensemen in the NHL, he'll get north of 4.5mil in his next contract and it looks like the Oilers are close to re-signing him.

There's a way to do both by not going overboard like the Pens did, but getting one key player. Don't forget that the Habs are loaded in AHL/Junior talent and has 3 second round pick this year in what is a deep draft.

That's not necessarily true. MB could have told MT I'm looking for a stay at home d man but in the meantime while I try to make a deal let's see what we have in Hamilton. He has a pretty good idea that Weber & Kaberle are not NHL worthy. So while he looks for a trade he's trying out the prospects.

I'm not saying that's the case but it sounds like it to me.

My logic in believing they are no longer looking for a D is that they should have started the auditions 1-2 weeks earlier if it is as you say. Now it's ~2 days away from the deadline and they have tried Beaulieu for 1 game and they haven't called up Ellis yet. It's unlikely that they'll get anyone imho, they would have made their move last week or earlier.

MB also hinting that he wasn't looking for rentals is another point. Well that's according to some folks on l'AC anyway.

While I would like Clowe...to me the biggest need is big bruising stay-at-home d-man.

Murray would have been nice after all. 2 games with the Pens and they still didn't give up a goal

He looked slow this year in San Jose and so did Clowe so maybe what Ryan needs is also a change of scenery

I also think a defender is the biggest need - but going through the likely 'sellers' and looking at their pending UFAs doesn't really offer a lot of potential targets. Unless Bergevin makes a hockey trade and takes on salary beyond this season (which I don't see happening).

I think this is probably the reason for the recent auditioning for Bouillon's partner - i.e. can they fill this need internally.

Love, love, love this time of year!

The flyers woes continue, just when they look to be on the upswing (somewhat)

Except one or two weeks earlier, Diaz wasn't hurt. They had a full allotment of d-men with Weber & Kaberle waiting in the wings. After Diaz went down, they played Kaberle one game and Weber the next. That's when Weber got hurt and then they started with the AHL auditions. If Diaz hadn't gone sown or they knew for sure he would be back by the playoffs then yeah I agree with you, they're not going after a d-man. But with the uncertainty of Diaz's return, they really have only 5 d-men on the blueline. Circumstances dictate they go get a veteran d-man despite what MB said at the beginning of the year.

This is from the local (St. John's) paper. I'm pretty sure this is an April Fools thing but nevertheless:

Forget about Talbot:

Renaud Lavoie ‏@RenLavoieRDS 49s Season over for Maxime Talbot. Broken left leg. #flyers #RDS

Maybe rumous of Clowe to Philly aren't that ridiculous.

Talbot's season is now over due to a broken leg.

you could be right. flyers should end up with a decent 1st round pick this year.. although they'd be mad trading it to SJ for Clowe. IMO, Philly should be looking for a D man to 'replace' Pronger.

People say we could use a big dman who can clear the crease but I disagree. Our defense looked amazing when we had a smallish puck moving guy who was also good defensively by helping us not spend half the game in our own zone.

I'd like a guy who can play 22-23 min of solid puck movement. But I don't know who is available that could fit that bill. I'd also not want him for more than the remainder of the season, and only if Diaz won't be available for the playoffs.

Up front, it depends on Bourque, but even then I do feel we have decent depth. That said, we could use a talented forward up front, someone to run the PP. Jagr would definitely be nice.

I'd be pissed if the flyers traded for Clowe - overpaying or not. I like their pro-active approach - and they're a ****ing bubble team! we need a player like Clowe more than they do.

This is the right answer.

Our nagging issue is in front of our own net, letting opposing forwards sneak unguarded into shooting lanes and getting the puck out of our damn zone. Almost all our mistakes are in our zone. Yes, part of that is the trade-off for being a quick transition team. Faster, higher-risk passes make us dangerous offensively, but results in more turnovers and missed assignments. That's our system and it obviously works, but in the playoffs we need to be a much more solid wall than we currently are. Remember, the playoffs are about less-exciting things like pacing yourself and shutting down the other guys. Defensemen are the support beams to the foundation.

Our rookie defensemen will be great, but probably not right away. So yeah, bring on a big, tough D who will take care of business near Price and punish their forwards.
