Hilarious. Are they sure they don't want Bobrovsky instead?

I also don't believe that anyone in Philadelphia thinks Mason is the answer as a #1 goalie, moreso they figure if they can buy low and turn him around, then they pick up a cheap asset.

Perhaps you can tell me what the point of trading for a UFA to be would be when we're not even in the playoff picture?

Well, first off, Flyers are only 4 points out of the playoffs at this point, which makes it still achievable (Maybe not with those injuries to the d-core), especially in light of the play of the Rangers lately.

Secondly, Mason is technically an RFA-to-be until the point he's not qualified. But, there's no reason the Flyers couldn't acquire Mason now and negotiate a new deal with him. Basically, they would talk to Mason and his agent ahead of time and say "There's no way we want you at $3 million, but we'll offer you two years at $1.5/$1.8 million per and give you a chance to turn it around" and if Mason agrees, make the deal (And I don't see any reason Mason wouldn't agree, as, otherwise, he's likely to be a UFA and end up in Europe/AHL). Then, either the Flyers go forward with Mason developing as Bryzgalov's back-up and hopes he pushes Bryz to play harder with actual competition behind him or deploy them as more of a regular tandem, with Mason playing every 3rd or 4th game and see how Bryz responds to the lighter workload, it would certainly be preferable to Boucher or Leighton. Now, if the Flyers do amnesty Bryzgalov, Mason could be in the 1B. goalie with another cheap goalie brought in to battle him for starts. With a relatively low cap hit, there's little risk on Mason, he can always be dumped to the minors.

I'd like to think that the Flyers have learned how a goalie can often be the product of a coach/system, like Bryz, and not make the same mistake twice.

that says noting about the Flyers being interested in Mason now. 2 years ago, ya, but not now

Honestly, I think it's possible we send Mase a QO simply so we can get something for his rights.

(actually, I'm not 100% clear on RFA rules - is it legally possible to get a contract below the current cap hit so long as a QO was offered? i.e. we send a one-year QO at that $3m rate but actually sign him for, say, $1.75m/year for two or three?)

Flyers should go with a Mason/Raycroft tandem for next season... It can't get any worse than it is, right?
