Blues Make Bold Moves in Pre-empting Trade Deadline

(AP) St. Louis: Say this about St. Louis Blues General Manager Nick Quain. He sure doesn’t wait for an invitation to join the party.

In a pair of bold moves that preempted the HFNHL’s trade deadline, Quain acquired two missing pieces to the Blues Stanley Cup puzzle. On Friday, he swapped forwards Drew Stafford and Guillaume Latendresse, along with young defenceman TJ Brennan and a 5th round pick in the 2013 Entry Draft to Boston for veteran forward Martin St. Louis and a 4th round pick. Sunday, he swung his second deal of the weekend, shipping a pair of young free agent pick-ups to Carolina for versatile veteran forward Vaclav Prospal.

St. Louis is the potential prize catch of the 2013 trade deadline, as he remains one of the league’s elite forwards and brings a uniquely effective element of playmaking to the Blues as a scoring winger. It is believed the Blues see him as a perfect complement to their shoot-first 2nd line center, Jeff Carter, with St. Louis joining Carter and Daniel Alfredsson on the Blues 2nd line in his first game with the team Sunday night.

Prospal is a versatile forward capable of playing all three forward positions and should bring a good blend of two-way abilities to the Blues, most likely on the 3rd line with David Bolland and Lars Eller when he ultimately joins the Blues.
St. Louis was excited to join the team, after a frustrating season in Boston that saw his moral plummet.

“I want to win the Stanley Cup,” he said. “I’ve seen them [the Blues] play and played against them. I like the compete they have. I want to be a piece of the puzzle.”

With an aging team built around several core players seemingly at the twilight of their careers, the Blues faced a tough situation as their team struggled to keep up with the elite teams in the West at mid-season. Both Chris Pronger and Daniel Alfredsson could retire this offseason, with Pronger the more likely, while other key players such as Joe Thornton and Zdeno Chara, not getting any younger. The window, as they say, would seem to be closing.

While still awaiting league approval, the Prospal deal would see the Blues send young forward Andrew Agozzino and defender Victor Bartley to the Hurricanes. Both players were AHL all-stars this season, whom the Blues had signed earlier this season.

The phrase "struggled to keep up with the elite teams in the West" implies that your Blues aren't one of them.

St. Louis should be an impact acquisition, to be sure - and who doesn't like the idea of St. Louis in St. Louis?!?

This is going to be a dogfight all the way to the end.
