Carolina needs a playmaker for the 2nd line (Skinner and J. Staal). What's the lowdown on Bouchard?
Started off slow, has picked it up since the Wild have found lines that have worked effectively. Cullen and Setoguchi have been playing very well as of late and Bouchard has done his part here and there.
However, there's issues with Bouchard. For one, he's about one good hit from calling it a career due to concussions. He's a perimeter player to the T. Not all that strong on the wall but he is crafty. Has a good shot but refuses to use it. In the end, he'll have some games where he's a factor and makes everyone better. But he'll also have numerous games where he's nowhere to be found. And given his tendencies, he's not really a player I'd be comfortable with in the playoffs or vying for the playoffs.
What kind of player is McBain, he has size but how is his skating, puck handling, first pass out of the zone, stick work?
Above average offensive talent, particularly as a puck-mover
Pretty good skater, tends to stay in position at both ends using his skating ability
Puck handling is quite good, especially walking the line in the offensive zone
Not a terrible positional defender, has a decently active stick
Relatively young, still developing his game
Soft. Really really soft. His size doesn't matter, because he rarely hits anyone
While his defensive positioning and stickwork isn't bad, he's easy to play against
Hasn't produced offensively lately
Seems to be in a little over his head when placed on a top-4 pairing
His developmental progress seems to be testing the patience of coaching and management
If Toronto eats the full 50% allowed of Liles' contract...maybe?
Yeah Liles is just a terrible trade for McBain given the cap implications. He's been just as productive as McBain and is older on a much worse contract for a longer term. Leafs would have to eat about half the contract to make it make sense for the Canes.
