That's the problem with this proposal. Both sides want more added. Not gonna work.
No, the problem with this proposal is that Jake Gardiner as a young defender with significant upside, is much more valuable that Mark Giordano at this time. If Giordano was playing like he was two or three years ago, then the proposal is somewhat close.
Why would Calgary add more? Giordano is a top-pairing defenseman in his prime. Gardiner's a good young defenseman, but I'm not sure what makes him worth more than Gio at this point in time. You have to give to get, if we've learnt anything during this trade season.
Am I the only Leaf fan who doesn't totally hate this deal?
I mean, I like Gards and he's got high potential, but Giordano would fit in nicely (other than his lefty shot). We do desperately need another defenseman to compliment Phaneuf or eat some of his minutes. It's not like the guy is old either.
Gardiner's value is probably pretty low this year and Nonis has talked about keeping his younger players or trading them for other young players so it likely won't work out. That said, I don't think its that horrible of an idea.
Gardiner's offensive upside is much higher, but I think Giordano will be the better overall defenseman. If Gardnier can learn to defend he'll blow Gio out of the water. Too much upside to give up on him now.
Gardiner has more upside than this version of Giordano. He's on the decline and has yet to prove he can maintain his past effectiveness. As such, one should be able to understand why they'd rather take their chances with Gardiner, who is also significantly younger and controllable (in terms of salary).
