Agreed. I'd much rather trade Orpik over Martin.

I think so. If St. Louis doesn't get any defensive help during the deadline, I see them being a good partner. I'd like something around 1st + Rattie from them.

"How to keep Malkin/Letang/Iggy"

No one wants him traded right now, but in the future it might have to be done for cap purposes.

Not directed at anyone: I've played with capgeek for hours. The Penguins do not have to get rid of anyone to sign Iginla to a $5MM contract. They don't have to get rid of anyone to sign him to a $7MM contract, either, if they are able to fill out their 4th-line with minimum-wage guys after they trade Tanner Glass.

Signing Iginla is not going to kill this team next year. It becomes tricky the following year, but Everyone is coming off the books, so you can make decisions about re-signing someone like Bruce Orpeck or Eggs Malone.

Ahhh, okay. You have to wonder if Martin is worth keeping over a Letang that makes 7.5 million though (and I LOVE Tanger).

I believe Iggy said he wants to play for another 5 years. I'd imagine he may want the opportunity to go back to Calgary in a few years if they're competitive.

Anything under 5 mil on a multi-year deal is a godsend for this team. Shero has to want to end the revolving door on Sid's RW. As Jaded said, Iggy chose us. And Calgary will be a mess for the next few years. No reason Shero shouldn't be offering him a fair deal once Malkin/Letang are taken care of.

Well neither of those guys have played in the NHL before. So until they have proven to be able to handle the NHL you can't say we wouldn't miss a beat.

Have you seen those guys play a lot? Because nothing I've heard suggests Dumoulin is a replacement for Orpik in terms of physicality. Or are you saying even without it the pairing would be just as good, even as two green-horn rookies?

replacing Orpik with Dumoulin makes some sense...you can't replace Martin with Harrington...we'd be ****ed

I hate Orpik and wouldn't wish him on my worst enemy, but even I think it's a bit off to suggest that someone with 1 year of NHL experience and someone still in Major Junior could replace him. And the biggest reason I don't want to trade him, if we can improve the team without doing so: he's not slipping physically, he's slipping mentally. That SHOULD be correctable. AND AND AND Smid, who is probably as good as, or better, at this point in their careers, just signed for 3.5. Orpik could sign for around 3 on his next contract and be an awesome #4/5.

Obviously neither of those guys have orpiks physicality buts thats wy you retain muraay and play bortuzzo regularly. Harrington has an extremelly high hockey knowledge and also a very underrated offensive game. Domoulin is a jack of all spades and will help bring some size into the line-up. Saying we wouldnt miss a beat was an overtatement but with domoulin already knowing the pens sytem from college and harrington having the poise of a veteren they would help us

I think we would get by without Orpik next year, If we keep Murray for Phsical play and Eaton for the PK. But I don't think that we can get rid of Martin unless A. We know Letang staying for a while or B. Harrington Dumoulin or Maatta in the upcoming years can PROVE to replace Martin and all of his minutes. Harrington or Dumoulin could (hopefully, although that's thinking optimistically) prove themselves by next years draft or deadline, in which case it will make sense to get rid of Martin in time for new deals for Malkin and Letang.

The best time to win the Cup is also after the deadline. Why would you want to subtract from your Stanley Cup run so you could get a draft pick?

I dont mean in terms of pairing. Domoulin or harrington could replace either martin or orpik, individually. Obviously you dont take away two vetrans and replace them with rookies. For example i think the best scenario is you trade orpik at the draft, resign murray, give bortuzoo a full time job, then put harrington in orpiks spot. Some of the physicality is lost but harrington makes it up with his iq

This is also a tryout of sorts. Both ways. On paper it seems like an amazing match, but I am sure that Iginla wants to have at least this season and post season to see if it is how he imagined it to be here. The Pens as well may want to see how well he gels and if he is the solution when he actually begins playing. No one should have expected any contract talks until the season/post season ends.
