Happens all the time. Just like Sundin a star player didn't waive his clause to go to a team like the Montreal Canadiens.

How is it his fault if Luongo blocks the trade? If that hadn't been the case we'd all be singing Gillis' name in praise.

Luongo could have been wearing a Leafs jersey right now if he didn't believe he would be traded to Florida. Discuss!
The story doesnt explain why the leafs deal was yanked off the table. If Gillis denied it, and then found out the florida deal fell through, how come the Leafs offer was no longer there?

This sounds like throwing Luongo under the bus to save Gillis.

Regardless, they dont even say what the deal was.

Maybe it left with Brian Burke. Who knows. Though I don't know the timing of the story.

If the offer was Kadri + bozak and a 2nd it would've been worst then the Kessel trade, but like some other posters mentioned the leafs dodged a "HUGE" bullet.

I think the Leafs owners made the right choice of letting Burke go, even though he did good with acquiring some young players.

Still as a Canucks fan that wants Lu out, I am disappoint.
We lost out by not taking a player off your hands; which you are disappointed that has not left your team?

Is it not "ignant" to be disappointed he isn't gone; without knowing the details either?

If you deleted the hypocritical posts from these forums; there would probably be 2 posts left; both of which would feature emoticons only.

You seem to forget it was also reported that Luongo thought a trade with the Panthers was about to happen and we all know that's where he would only accept a trade to. So that's the reason he said no the Leafs and not because he didn't want to play in Toronto.

He also said he'd like to play for Chicago in the off season, so yeah, he didn't want to play for Toronto but was open to other teams.

No big loss if it was some garbage like Grabovski or MacArthur, but if Kadri was the one at play...

Or perhaps if he can't be traded to Florida he simply wants to be traded to a team that has a chance to contend for the cup over the next few years

This is one of those stories I don't believe for a second. If Luongo blocked a trade to the Leafs, it would have been headline news all across the country at the time.

I'm sure he would have waived for Ottawa, lol

Also, did you read the article?

Pretty sure there was no potential deal in place.
Think about it logically - why would either GM start making proposals if they didn't at least ask Luongo beforehand? Why try to make a deal when the player has a NTC. Maybe the Leafs, at the time, were willing to give up the Bozak+Kadri+2nd proposal, but it's pure speculation.

Pretty sure Boston just had a deal for Iginla in place before Iginla himself was asked.

Look at what happened between Calgary and Boston

Another rumor that makes Gillis look like he is in there mixing it up.

Luongo's contract is nothing short of garbage.

Iginla could have changed his mind, or maybe Pittsburgh switched their offer after finding out about Boston and Iginla had enough sway and respect that Feaster made the Penguins trade.

Either way, not a very good analogy as it was 2 teams involved and Iginla nixed the deal after it was confirmed done by many credible sources, both of those don't apply here.
You'd have to be a special kind of r-tard if you think Gillis and Burke/Nonis would try to make a deal before finding out if Luongo would accept going to Toronto.

I'm pretty sure Lou is on record saying he's never been asked to waive his no trade clause.

Since when is Doug Maclean suddenly a respected journalist around here?
