How much term would you give to maybe lower the cap hit a bit? Would you go 3 years, 15 million?

Yes, that's what it probably will be.

Just punched the hell out the air. Gonna do some windmill kicks if he does actually end up extending.

I'm really hoping to see him and crosby get a full season together.

Depends on the vibe Malkin and Letang give.

Iggy wants to play 5 more years. I think we'd have to offer him at least 3 or 4 years to get him signed. He's probably going to want 6m - 6.5 million in year one and then we can hopefully lower that cap hit to around 5 million by adding a cheap year or two at the back end of a 3-4 year deal.

Didn't Iggy say he wasn't even thinking about contracts and just wanted to concentrate on this season?

If Iginla and the Pens do what they should and make a long playoff run, he'll be back. Not an insider, obviously, but I'm almost 100 percent sure of that.

Iggy seems to be in great shape, I'd be willing to go 4 years if it brought the cap hit down enough.

3 or 4 years should be adequate, at most, to get him signed. No reason he can't go year-to-year like Selanne after that, if he still proves to be productive and both sides want him to stay at that point in his career.

I think if we offer as much as 4 years, it should bring the cap hit down. We could go as far as $5million, but I would feel more comfortable with something in the $4.5 range, because we'll need to extend Kunitz and will likely need to bump him and Dupers up a bit, as well.

Honestly, did people expect otherwise?

Common sense said that after 16 years, such a huge move, and his excitement at being here, that he did not intend to make this a few weeks or a couple months thing. His intent, and remember he CHOSE to be here, in rather dramatic fashion with a huge **** you to the Bruins, was always to take his shot at winning. That does not mean a one time shot, whether we win it all this year or not.

What was he going to do then? A couple months to 'live the dream' then rejoin the rebuild in Calgary for the next five years?

Anyone with an ounce of sense would have realized this was not a rental.

But will the contract have a setting up the play clause?

Seriously though, awesome news.

Yeah, I think we already knew Iggy wants to be here. He arguably forced his trade here since Boston offered more. There is a big difference between being a rental and signing on here for a few years though. It wasn't a concern about him but rather his family and if they would okay the move to a city so far away from Calgary. This news suggests that they would which is good for us.

The guy could have gone anywhere and he hand picked the Pens.

Ray, sign him to 3/4 for 15 to 20 million.

We were willing to sign Hossa for 7 years when he was 29. I think Shero wants that third guy who can help carry the team when one of Sid/Geno are out or are being shut down in a playoff series.

Iggy will be in great shape for several more years. He's the total package as a player. Hockey IQ, lethal shot, playmaker, can dominate play down low and around the net.

If I'm Shero, I lock him up as long as possible. Worry about the dropoff in 5 years.

I hope he signs the extension and in another few seasons retires with the Flames.

I'm sure a lot of people thought he'd return to Calgary, especially if he won a cup here.

I still doubt Iginla ever plays another season with the Flames.

He signs 3 years at 5M, wins 4 cups in that time, then goes back to Calgary and retires there.

I've been getting this vibe from you a lot today. So basically you're saying....

.... not going back to the Flames. Is that right?
