The Perfect Streit Deal (NYI- Edm)

To NYI:
Ryan Whitney + conditional 2nd in 2013 (if Streit resigns with Edmonton)

To Edm:
Mark Streit

NYI They get assets for Streit, but don't really set themselves back while they're in the playoff hunt.

Edmonton They get Streit for the playoff push, who is a slight upgrade on Whitney. They would also get the 1st shot at resigning him this offseason.

Islanders are tied for the 8th spot. they have a better shot at making the playoffs than the Oil do.

How does this help the Islanders?

Streit is better. The Isles are in the same position as Edmonton as far as young team trying to make the playoffs for the first time in years.

Why would the Isles want to downgrade and give up a chance to re-sign Streit for a conditional 2nd?

No interest in Whitney or a conditional 2nd.

I based it off this:

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger 2h
Mark Streit is unlikely to agree to extension with NYI.Isles may keep him for playoff race, but unless there's change, Streit will be a UFA.

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger 2h
With Streit negotiation stalled, expect teams to make a play for trade. Isles don't want to trade him yet. Could change overnight.

we had this before-- if Whitney resigns in NY then the Oilers should also get a second

Please Oilers fans, do us all a favor and stop including Ryan Whitney in all of your proposal... He's been garbage since coming back from his foot (feet?) surgery and we dont want him.... not even for a 7th

EDIT: The garbage part have even been said by tour fans on the main board and on your board

So the "assets" the Islanders get are conditional on the Oilers re-signing Streit. If they don't? Islanders just downgraded during a playoff push for no reason. Yeah, no thanks.

No interest in Whitney with his mobility/foot issue.

So the Isles take a massive downgrade in trading their captain, and the widely considered superior player for the allure of a conditional 2nd round pick with their already loaded prospect pool?

teams calling about Streit, doesn't mean Snow's moving him for a lousy return.

Fair enough. Its just hard to envision another 'hockey trade' that doesn't set the Isles back for their playoff push this season (i.e. picks/prosects)

You still haven't answered why the Isles would move him for a clear downgrade without any guaranteed long-term benefit.

This is perfect for Edmonton, they get a guaranteed upgrade. For the Isles, not so much.

It's hard to envision Whitney with his foot/ mobility issue, being a better option then Streit on the 2nd pairing or even Matt Donovan on the 3rd pairing.

Maybe, but why would the Isles move him for a downgrade? They don't need picks or prospects, and at this point making the playoffs is more important than getting a good return on Streit. So they should just keep him and if he walks in the off-season, well then he walks.

No, Whitney physically can't play anymore. His skating/mobility is shot from all the ankle injuries. No interest in resigning him either considering he's nothing more than a PP specialist.

Could work. Would probably have to be Whitney and a 2nd for Streit with a conditional 3rd or 4th if Streit re-signs in Edmonton.

But Regehr basically got 2 2nds and he's under contract. So Streit will probably get the equivalent of a 2nd and 4th or something straight up because he's more valuable but also a pending UFA, and then maybe another 2nd or 3rd conditional on if he re-signs.

lol, so the isles could in essence give up the BETTER defenseman AND a pick for just Ryan Whitney(if streit doesnt resign)?

This isnt even close bud, sorry.

Why does either team do this, they're both in a playoff run, and I cannot see NYI trading down to get Whitney. Mark Streit is not a good fit for the Oilers either, and IMO for a aging small offensive D, who could do more harm to a team defensively than what his offensive skills would help.

Mark Streit is a good offensive D, but to a team like Edmonton that allows more than 30 shots per game he would be more of a liability.

It works for Edmonton, but not for the Isles. Making the playoffs is just as important to the Isles as it is for the Oilers, let's keep that in mind.

As for the value that Streit may have, his availability is not in a vacuum. There should be interest from other teams that will inflate his value because he is a pending UFA. As far as I know, the salary cap is not an issue for the Oilers yet it is an issue for the other teams that could possibly be involved. Those teams may look at Streit as the rental that could put them over the top, I assume the Oilers would be looking to lock up Streit after this year considering his connection with your coach.

If Streit is dealt, he's not going to be cheap and I don't know if it would be worth it for Edmonton.
