STAAL UPDATE:

Per Jeremy Roenick on Sirius XM's NHL Network Radio (he was at the NYR v. WAS game last night):
Staal is lucky the puck hit his helmet first and there is no permanent damage and should be back relatively soon. (not a direct quote, more a summary from around 5:30PM today)

God I hope it's true. I don't know why I've been in such a Staal withdrawal

Man I hope Marc is feeling better and is close to coming back. I don't understand why the organization never updates its fans on how he is doing? He is such a key part to this organizations PRESENT AND FUTURE. I mean I understand if he has an upper body or lower body injury and don't want to disclose the exact injury, but we all know it was Marc's eye that was affected/injured.
Guess I am just a bit frustrated based on how this team is playing (loses to Panthers and Caps) and knowing that Staal would be a big help in trying to get this team into the playoffs.

defense is meh without Staal. This debunks that thought that we play just as good without him.

Because he's our best defenseman easily. Anyone who thought otherwise was a tad shortsighted.

I've always said staal is our best Dman. McD is a stud but needs to be more consistant. Hopefully Staal is back soon

Staal better be back soon, I'm starting to worry about a possible concussion.

No disrespect intended, but it seems almost everyone on this board brings up concussion no matter the injury lol. He was hit I'm the eye with a deflected snapshot if he can't see he can't play

Didn't it literally break his face too?

I'd imagine that takes a little longer than 3 weeks to heal

First the concussion, now this. I wonder if Staal already got the "injury prone" label on the main boards .

Recovery for NYR Staal slower than hoped. Earliest hope of return now would be mid/late April. Good days/bad days. Frustrating.
https://twitter.com/GlobeKPD/status/317794478108839936

Staal has non-displaced facial fractures. Kyle Quincey is out 4-6 weeks with multiple fractures of his cheekbone. Staal has broken bones in his face which didn't require surgery. They take time to heal. As of two weeks ago,he had not regained his full vision.

Quote:
Jordan, who joined his brother Eric on the Hurricanes, said that Marc sustained fractures on the play. A source confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com that Marc suffered non-displaced fractures, although those are not expected to affect his timetable. And although his vision is not 100 percent, he is expected to make a full recovery before his return.

When exactly will that be?

"I didn't really talk to him about that," Jordan said. "I'm not really sure. I think he's still got fractures and stuff to heal so it will take some time."

When coach John Tortorella talked Saturday morning about time running out, he might have been talking about the possibility of injured Rangers defenseman Marc Staal rejoining the lineup before this season ends.

Itís not that Staal, who was struck with a puck above the right eye on March 5 against Philadelphia, has suffered a setback.

Itís that Staal, who is being monitored continually and has undergone regular exams, has not yet been cleared to skate.

That makes four weeks this coming Tuesday since Staal was struck by the Jakub Voracek deflection of Kimmo Timonenís drive at the Garden, which limits the amount of time for the defenseman to gain proper conditioning in order to play.

we we're playing our best hockey of the year right before staals injury.. i really think hes imperative and linked to this teams success we need him.. hes our glue and makes our defense much muhc much better, bc right now its awful and guys like McD and Girardi are either playing burnt out or injured and toughing it out.. we get him back sooon, well be in much better shape..

This team with Staal back in the lineup, and to a lesser extent Sauer is so much tougher to play against. We certainly are snake-bitten with these devastating injuries of late. Just hopeful Staal can make a full recovery.

Do not speak in absolutes about player injuries unless you have a legitimate source to back it up.

Staal....

Bones = 6 weeks to heal
Blood inside eye, if present = 6 weeks to dissipate or else outpatient surgery to replace the fluid

getting back in shape = ??

I don't think he comes back this season.

Well, getting back into game shape and getting back into "high level" shape are different things. When he's healthy, he could probably be back in a game after a week. If he's not nearly up to par, do we even bother?

Can he be any worse than Hamrlik or Eminger?

If he's sluggish and apprehensive, as guys often are when returning too quickly, then he may be on par with them.

I think he'll probably be fine after two weeks, as you said. You never know though.
