If Orlov is being traded it better be for Yandle.

The bolded is all I needed to hear really.

Oleksy has been excellent and absolutely deserves to be pinned on that 3rd pairing and would be for most any team. Hits, fights, shoots, good skater and all around good teamate.

PIMs (the bad kind) are the only thing bringing Oleksy down right now. Eye test looks good, possession numbers look good. I'm impressed. I mean, I'm a Caps fan, so I still expect him to come crashing back right when we need him most (after trading away a bunch of RD depth most likely), but until then I'm impressed.

That said, as to the "adding toughness" stuff: Recker isn't an NHL add (or if he is, the Caps are worse than even I thought) and Volpatti looks like an afterthought at this point. With Schmidt you have to wait and see whether it will ever translate. Orlov-level physical tools without necessarily much aggressiveness, maybe.

Until it actually happens, I'm not going to get worked up about Orlov being trade bait at this time. The Caps have played 35 games this season and by my count 12 different defenseman (Hamrlik, Poti, Carlson, Alzner, Green, Olesky, Erskine, Schultz, Orlov, Kundratek, Hillen and Schilling) have played, 6 of the aforementiond defensemen have been out with one form of an injury or another. Defenseman just by the nature of the position that they play seem to get the brunt of the injuries, so having depth at that position is critical. Hamrlik is gone and after this season I would expect Poti and perhaps Hillen and maybe someone else. Schilling and Wey will be in Hershey most likely next season along with Schmidt. The team needs depth at that position.

Caps only have 4 RHD, so I don't see a trade coming from there. In fact, with the roster limit going away, I don't necessarily see a trade at all.

"The 26-year-old Hillen gets $700,000 in each of the next 2 seasons. Had signed first one-way NHL deal with #Caps last summer."

He's cheap. And he's not awful.

He does not play in the top 6 for a contender. Against good teams, he is exposed. None of the things you listed, is he above average at.

edit- WTF at the Hillen signing. How many bottom pairing D do we need?

So, Orlov, Schultz, and Poti are still standing and the music stops in a few hours.

I hope whichever GM lost out on Bouwmeester is on the phone with George McPhee right now.

A very decent depth defenseman with a $700k cap hit. That is barely above the minimum. Is there someone else you would rather have sitting in the press box most nights?

A deal that happened 3 months too late. Stafford has been horrendous in Hershey and had a bad attitude.

Byers heh, I can only imagine he is related to Lyndon Byers, former goon.

Sure enough, he has enough PIMs to fit the bill and continuing trend of getting tougher.

Well GMGM's recent signings or resignings along the blue line have been for either mobile or physical defenseman. Jeff Schultz does not fit either bill.

The Caps have re-signed Jack Hillen to a two-year, $1.4 million contract.

Sorry if posted elsewhere.

So, with Alzner certainly going to be signed and Erskine already signed, I guess this means one of two things. Either McPhee felt justified in spending 1.4M over two years for a guy who, when everyone's healthy, is a scratch... or that Erskine deal really was with the intention that he'd be our 2LD for the next two years.

Here's hoping Hillen is well liked in the press box.

On the plus side, this has got to guarantee the end of the Schultz era in DC, right?
