What if? Defense question.

What if Markov, Rivet and Souray all opt for UFA next summer? What are our options from both a free agent and prospect point of view?

Personally I feel Rivet will re-sign, Markov is a toss-up and Souray is gone. That leaves 1 or 2 spots to fill on our top 4. I don't see any of our prospect capable of playing top 4 minutes.

If i remember right , there are almost no good defenseman on the UFA market next year.Actually , Markov is supposed to be one of the best available.

My priority would be to resign him (Markov) , then offer a contract to both Rivet and Souray but don't overpay for them.If they want too much money , just let them walk (and i think that Souray will. Not sure about Rivet).

Anyone has a list of all the UFA defensemans for next year ?

O'Byrne will have spent a full year in Hamilton by then, so who knows. If he looks good this year, he might have a spot.

Emelin will likely spend another full year in the RSL, and that might be good enough for him to make the jump to the NHL.

But hopefully we can keep at least Markov, and/or bring in another true top pairing guy.

I'm pretty confident at least one of the three will leave, though, and I'd bet on Souray if I had to.

UFA next year: Rafalski, Phillips, Schneider, Timonen and Stuart.

Though some of them might be RFA only

Rivet won't leave, he loves Montreal.

Markov I don't know, maybe our friends Kovalev and Samsonov can convince him to stay.

Souray I think is headed out west.

Rivet will stay... 2.5-3M$, i think...
Souray will be gone...
Markov will stay if it's less than 3.5M$...

Streit should be in the top 6...
O'Byrne or Emelin could be the 7th...
Phillips could be a good remplacement for Souray...

From what I believe he's far from heading those kind of number. Even if he already made that amount of money he doesn't deserve more than 1.8 millions a year in the new market.

What? If Rivet has a year like the last, he will be getting near 3M$. BOUILLON got what?
Look around the league! 1.8, you are delusional!

I think it's far too early to say what players should or will get next Summer. A big factor in determining the marketplace is the salary cap, and we have no idea whether it will stay at $44M, go up, or go down.

The higher the cap, the higher the contracts. If the market is comparable to this summer's, then IMO Rivet is worth $2.5 to $3M, Souray $3M to $3.5M, and Markov at least $4M.

But of course their play this year will affect a lot.

Scott Hannan will also be available. I wouldn't mind seeing him in a Habs uni.

I also think Rivet will stay, so the problem is on the LD side. Losing Markov would be a hug blow, I don't see how we can over come that but hopefully it doesn't happen. If it does, then hopefully Emelin can make the jump to at least see what he can do. Losing Souray would also hurt but imo he would be easier to replace then Markov but it's his leadership that would be the biggest hit. I still remember when he had a mic on and was talking to Markov during a game, saying how "I know your favorite player was Fetisov but you got to get the puck in deep" or something like that.

Either way hopefully Gainey can get them to stay since we could be a couple years away from our prospects being NHL ready (Emelin/OB) Of course they may be ready sooner then expected but I'd hate to have to rely on that.

I feel you guys are optimistic with your dollar amount regarding Markov future contract. I doubt we would be able to keep him for less than 5M.

Rumors. That perception will not be changing anytime soon either, regardless of what the facts are. I personally have no clue whether Souray will stick around or not.

One thing people haven't mentioned yet is that while we may end up short some D, we will have an abundance of NHL calibre forwards (knock on wood.) If guys like Kostitsyn, Grabovsky, Chipchura, Latendresse, Lapierre, and so on down the list become ready to step into the bigs, the habs will have ample forwards they can deal to patch holes elsewhere in the lineup.

Let's put Kovalev and Sammy on the case.
If we cannot sign Markov to a long term deal before he becomes UFA, I will cry.

Why does everyone have this paranoid dellusion that Markov is going to flee from montreal the minute the season is over?

Gainey will offer him the right contract and he'll stay. Heck, Gainey gave Ribeiro 1.9M and Bouillon alomst the same... you dont think he's gonna give Markov what he wants?

Try around 4m for Souray and towards 5m for Markov.

3.5m for Markvov.

Markov is a very good player but he DOES NOT deserve more money than Kaberle and Kim Jonsson are beeing paid. If he doesn't agree to sign below or around 4,5 milions I would seriously consider signing someone else.

I didn't say I believe Markov deserves 5m, but after this year's arbitration rulings and provided the league does well revenue-wise next season I don't see how he can get a contract of 3.5m or less per year. I think that a figure between 4m and 5m is much more realistic, but you never know of course.

Jonson at 5 millions is wayyyyyy overpaid so he's a bad reference. But Kaberle is a very good one IMO and I'm pretty sure the contracts signed by other #1D this summer have him thinking: "Damn, I could have get 1 million more. What do you think he says to himself when he looks at Kubina with his 5 mil / year contract?

4.5 millions is the bare minimum for a #1 D nowadays and I predict Markov'll sign for no less than 5 mil$

Bob will offer Markov 3.5 only if he wants to insult him...

Kaberle is widely viewed to have signed a bad deal. He is their best d-man and is being paid substantially less than McCabe or Kubina. IMO Markov's agent isn't going to make the same mistake Kaberle's did.
