They have no depth for a long playoff run.. we have a defenseman playing forward. They have 14 players signed for next year and about $9 million in cap space.. Hopefully they could acquire some cheap younger players while the core plays out their remaining years. Greiss is an UFA and will probably walk.. get a 6th if you can and bring Alexander Joseph Stalock up.

I think he pretty much has too. We need another forward now, someone who fits the new younger faster shoot first sharks. There are still some wingers out there that would fit our needs, maybe someone like Stafford or Grabner, maybe get someone cheap from the Flames.

Saying it like that makes it sound worse than it is.

Shep, Gali and Des will combined for ~$3.5M - $4M conservatively.
Add Stalock for $725 (QO)
Some 4th liner for $700.

That leaves $4.2M - $4.7M for a 2nd line winger (Assuming they move Burns back to defense) and Demers' raise. This is also assuming they keep Tennyson up with his $1.1M price tag (or re-sign Irwin for the same price, but I think Irwin is gone at the end of the year). Not bad considering the cap drop.

With our strength at D, I say move Niemi this summer(3.6mill) and let Stalock and Sateri battle for the G spot.

An extra $3.6mil could do wonders.

No way Irwin doesnt get re-signed..

If DW ever let us see how Stalock and/or Sateri do at the NHL level then I may be ok with that. The problem is that he rides Niemi all year long. Stalock and Sateri are both unknowns that I don't think can be trusted as full-time goalies.. yet.

Why? Niemi is playing great and it would be a bad idea to go into the season with two unproven goalies. 3.8 is a steal for a good starting goalie.

Niemi is having the best season of his career statistically. Stalock and Sateri have just one NHL appearance (zero starts) between them. I highly doubt Niemi is moved.

However, I am for trading Greiss (Tampa?) for a late round pick. I think he'd leave via free agency if they kept him.

I think the Sharks might make a trade, but only for some bottom-6 depth, since we now have no spare NHL forwards. Something like a late-round pick for an expiring contract. So, yes, but nothing earth-shattering.

I hope DW adds some experience at defense if Burns is to remain at wing. Whoever is today's version of Keith Carney would be a good addition. Would that be Scott Hannan? Or is he brutal now?

Well, DW did say after trading Murray that he still expects the team to make the playoffs, and that he's looking to add a young roster player. I think we all assumed that player would come in the Clowe trade, but it's possible he's got something else up his sleeve. I don't expect any other trades, though. Tomorrow will probably be very boring.

Our strength at D will lead to a trade that involves moving one of our guys on D. If Boyle is moved at the draft, there's no sense in moving Niemi unless he garners incredible value which is unlikely from the goalie position. They need to trade Boyle at the draft and see what they get from that and what they will have up front. Do the amnesty buyout on Burish then fill in the holes after moving Burns back to D. If Tennyson proves enough while Demers is out, you can move one of Braun or Demers (I would prefer moving Braun)for a similarly-aged forward.

Havlat-Thornton-???
Marleau-Couture-Wingels
Sheppard-Pavelski-Galiardi
???-Desjardins-???

Vlasic-Burns
Stuart-Demers
Irwin-Braun
Tennyson

Niemi-Greiss/Stalock

If the cap is an issue and keeping Boyle or adding significant pieces is something they can't pass up then I would not hesitate to move Niemi as I think while he is having a good year, he is still replaceable. I do believe any of the three from Stalock, Sateri, or Greiss if given the consistency of games can step up to Nemo's current level more or less.

One of the major reason's we are seeing an improvement in Niemi's game is the sharks adapting and compensating for Niemi's deficiencies. Thomas took the Bruins all the way to a cup because the Bruins defense (Chara) didn't allow the backdoor, cross-ice plays that would cripple such an aggressive goalie. The Sharks defense also have been preventing those type of passes (Niemi is not atheletic enough to get over and stop those chances) as well as collapsing and clearing the rebounds that he gives up. I'm not saying Niemi hasn't improved, but Vezina-like year he is having isn't just on him.

Switching goalies now would mean having to figure it out all over again.

Not as much as you think. The Sharks don't have the assets (nor the desire) to go out and acquire a big name forward in which we would need the cap space. The notion that they could grab one in free agency is, cute, at best. That leaves them with the need to develop from within. Hertl/Nieto are the best bets to fill in the slots in the top-6 (not necessarily next year), and they aren't going to cost us a lot in cap space.

I have no doubt that Wilson will tender him an offer, but if he wants to go elsewhere, he can.

Who are some logical, younger players (attractive contracts, in the dog house, not living up to expectations, etc.) that DW could make a move for tomorrow IF he decides to do so?

Is Ray Whitney too expensive? $4.5 this year and next.

He has a 19% shooting percentage this year, 13% for his career.

DW had this to say about possible deals tomorrow:

"Between now and tomorrow, we certainly have a lot of picks we could utilize,” he said. “We certainly have players that people like, that are players that we like also. I don’t know what will unfold tomorrow. But, I always take any call, and sometimes you get surprised on certain things.

“We like the way our team is playing. If we weren’t playing as well as we have in the last little while, we might be looking at some different things. But, right now, the way the group looks and how everybody falls into certain roles, we’re pleased. But, we’re always looking at ways to get better."
