I hope he proves me wrong, but at this point he is a big question mark who is a medium risk medium reward.

I know better than to become optimistic about any NYR trades or signings.
Oh yea I realized that but the angst about signing is based on age and performance both are major familiar warning signs.

Lets say the Rangers don't make the playoffs and can't agree to a deal with Clowe I wonder what the rangers could get if they packaged him with Gabs at the draft. Or even flip him for a 3rd or something.

Okay.
Throwing the word "magically" in there is a very transparent attempt on your part to discredit something that any rational person would see as very reasonable.

Yes, it is completely reasonable to think that three former all-stars return to form.

One scored 41 goals last year on his way to 76 pts. He has scored 40+ 2 of his 3 years here. But the only way he can start scoring again would "magic".

One scored 25 goals last year on his way to 66 pts. He has scored 77 and 91 pts the two previous years. But the only way he can start putting up pts again would be "magic".

One scored 17 goals last year on his way to 45 pts. He averaged over 20 goals and over 55 pts the previous 3 years. But the only way he can start scoring goals and putting up pts again would be "magic".

LOL!

Okay.

As someone who lives in the Bay Area and attends/watches many Sharks games, I'm not sure about this trade yet. Clowe brings the sandpaper that the Rangers lost in the offseason. He's tough, stands up for his players, and is a classic Torts kind of guy. He was a fan favorite in San Jose - his jersey was very popular at the Tank. Has a great down to earth personality too.

However, he has slowed down. Maybe it's the injuries and he will improve. Him being goal-less is part being snakebitten, but the way he's been playing I wouldn't expect him to be scoring 20 anytime soon. Has hands of stone- will make Callahan look like Patrick Kane. Recently he has a tendency to gain the zone along the boards and get confused on what to do and slow down -hell either dump it in or turn it over. Rarely you will see him drive to the net with the puck. He also takes a lot of penalties.

Maybe Torts will spark him - playing in SJ may have been discouraging for him recently. SJ is a good team but not a team that plays with much passion and heart, they tend to win games on talent and their more new defensive system. They never seem to get in fights (losing Clowe and Murray I'd argue they're now one of the softest teams in the league) or play with much grit.

Hopefully Clowe makes us forget about those picks.

In the end I totally get why some people are immediately upset we traded that much for someone with zeeeeeero goals on the season who is 31 years old who plays on the west coast(hard to watch him) and we can't score to save our lives this year. Just seems like a cruel joke.
Look, no offense, but if you are "fairly new" to the sport, don't try telling people who sucks and who does not suck. You have been doing this since your first post here, basically. We all love new fans of the game, but I don't think you're really in a position to judge players based on limited viewing.

Only thing is, all 3 things happening is unlikely. The more events that you throw in there, the less likely. No matter how likely each event is on its own.

True if we're talking about unconnected events. But in this case there's a very good chance at least two of these are playing on the same line. If one guy starts going there's a very good chance that will get another guy going.

And yet none of those downsides to this deal match the real brainscratcher about this.

What happens if Clowe plays up to his previous standards, rips **** up, and Richards and Gaborik still suck? The team won't go anywhere in the playoffs.
Those are all fair points, some of the same points I was making earlier

He's a good two way player, he adds toughness, but overall one player does not make the difference on what we've been watching this year. And like you said he could be everything he's billed to be, that's still not enough. The biggest holes are still not filled or maybe somehow Gab and Richards were just waiting for Clowe to get here and 'create space'. ,

And then there is the age, injuries and contract. Three things that rarely add up to anything good in Rangerland when said all in the same sentence.

Now I wonder will they add one or two more players, more deals ahead tomorrow? If so how long will it take for them to adjust?

I like the acquisition. Not sure what's wrong with the guys game this year, but he's a better version of Dubi.

He's like a Dubi/Cally mutt. He's got hustle and grit and he can score from the dirty areas. He can add spark.

Lets pray the fresh start is what he needs. If he makes the most of this opportunity this is a fine trade. All trades have risk...

So...is he the BE all, END all type of player?

From reading several messageboards it seems we came up short on this deal.

But I've been wrong before.

No , but neither was Prust, Dubi, Avery

Clowe brings a bit of what each of those guys had.

Don't need to watch sharks games on a regular basis to have an idea of what type of player he is. It just comes off as somewhat surprising. Not the end of the world.

And knowing a lot about hockey/ watching games from other teams doesn't equate to not having a life lol.

I know for a fact that I lack this so called, "life". I'm on here way too often.

No not entirely, maybe bad example, but comparatively speaking. It may seem that way due to the speed Clowe skates with the puck, which isn't that fast. He makes some nice shoot out moves though.

Gaborik, Boyle, or Pyatt, I could see used as stone-hands examples. but with Cally I really just don't see it.
