I don't see the Sharks pulling a "Kings" this season and coming out of nowhere to win the cup. If anything we will see another 1st round exit, so why not trade Boyle when teams will be most interested?
Boyle is the most important guy on defense. He does so many things that we take for granted. If we trade him we miss the playoffs and it will probably upset the players. They will wonder why they got rid of their most important defenseman when they are 2 points out of 4th. Management isn't going to miss out on playoff revenue either just to get picks for Boyle. It will be better and smarter to trade him at the draft.

The Ginner trade might be DW's worst. Right up there with Seto.

Nope. The Seto trade netted Brent Burns. The McGinn trade looks bad now because Winnik didn't re-sign.

But up until they moved Burns to forward he hadn't done much of anything except get hurt a couple times.

So since we lost our tough guys in Murray and Clowe, does Wilson look to add The Otter from Buffalo? lol

Maybe we can get Parros too from Florida?

I look at Visnovsky as the closest comparable. Much like what we are expecting with Boyle, Vis was traded at the draft with a year left on his contract. Boyle is certainly better than Vis, while Vis is younger with a lower cap hit and significantly lower salary. I don't think a mid-first for Boyle is an unreasonable expectation, but getting a 1st + top prospect is out of the question.

They wouldn't take Burish back.

He was excellent in the second half of last season. You also can't simply discount what he has done lately.

Guess you missed him playing defense last year and being one of the few to show up against the Blues. Revisionist history is nice with trades. Setoguchi has been on the 4th line and even healthy scratched by the Wild this year. Hes on his yearly hot streak which will end now that Matt Cullen is hurt. Give me Brent Burns compete level and talent over 30 games of an effective Setoguchi any day.

I have blocked out that Blues series from my memory...

I know that the Mcginn trade was made at the urging of SJ's analytics deparment. DW was hesitant about trading Mcginn since Mcginn had been meeting on-ice expecations...

Right up there with the trade that brought in the most versatile player in the league? Brent Burns' impact as an elite puck-moving defenseman is more than enough to justify what the Sharks gave up. 6'5 defensemen who can skate like the wind don't grow on trees. A defenseman, especially one with his size and skating ability, that can promptly change into a legitimate top six forward is ridiculously valuable. I don't think people understand how difficult it is to do what Burns is doing. It's one thing for a player to occasionally switch positions in Midget or Juniors. Even in the NHL, you see a depth defenseman sometimes be used as a fourth line forward in an emergency situation. But Burns isn't doing that. He's an All-Star defenseman that is playing on the wing of one of the best playmaking centers in NHL history, and I think we would all agree that he has been fantastic. Burns is an incredibly valuable player. He has the offensive skill set of a top-six forward and the ability to adjust his style of play based on where he is playing. Someone made a thread asking if Boyle could potentially play forward the other day. He can't. He doesn't think like a forward because he hasn't played forward in about 20 years. That is what makes Burns even more valuable than just what he brings as a defenseman.

The McGinn trade I will give you. That looks pretty crappy right now, even to someone who didn't think much of it as recently as the beginning of this season. But really, the Burns trade was fantastic for the Sharks. Setoguchi and Coyle are certainly tough players to give up, but Burns brings more than enough to compensate for that. Plus, he passed on free agency (which would have happened after last year) to re-sign with the Sharks before he ever played a game here. In the world where far inferior UFA defensemen easily grab 5M a year, Burns is signed to a pretty bargain-rate deal.

Although toughness is gone, NEITHER of those guys are the answer.

Ott would cost way too much and Parros...I really hope that was a joke, we don't use enforcers anymore who can do nothing but fight (which is why McLaren was waived earlier this year).

Yes. Both were a joke actually.

Pierre LeBrun: @Real_ESPNLeBrun: Hearing the San Jose Sharks are close to acquiring Scott Hannan. Not done yet but close. Lkely mid-round pick going other way.
