Guys who have made $50+M over their careers are highly unlikely to stick around for $1M/year. I wonder if that is going to change the thought process from GM's on the contracts that are long enough to have the back-diving "surcharge" in place (Hossa, Luongo, Briere, Richards, etc.).
For an example of actual loyalty see: Daniel Alfredsson. Playing out a 1mil(further reduced by the lockout) year right now with no guarantee of an extension, and he signed for a discounted rate to begin with.

Does Calgary get dinged for his cap hit savings?

His salary in the current contract until the end of this year averages 6.7/season, whereas his cap hit was 5.83. This means over the life of the contract, 4.35 million was saved in cap hit.

So he retires, proving the final year of his deal was 100% bogus and cap circumventing.

Hopefully the hammer of justice smashes the Flames the way it smashed the Devils, and then every other one of these teams where the last year was obviously fraudulent.

Luongo has negative value. No team needs a goaltender with a 5.3 million cap hit until 2022. If Gillis wants to move him he needs to find a partner and needs to eat part of that salary or take very little in return or trade cap problems.

Gillis shot himself in the foot with that contract.

Yes....35 mil locked up already. They need to sign 11 more players.

Bit of a difference between Kipper's six-year deal and Kovalchuk's 17-year deal....

The classy thing to do for the Flames would be to pay him for his last year. Like the Flyers did with/for Primeau.

Stop blaming Kipper for not playing out the last year of his contract. Clearly the Flames agreed to this when they designed the contract that way.

At the time Kipper signed his contract I am willing to bet anything there was no intention of retiring early. Circumstances have made it so that he is now needing to retire; Flames suck, want to trade him and he has a family that needs him in Calgary.

You can keep that hammer of justice of yours...

Who is to say what Alfie would have done if the Sens looked to be at the beginning stages of a rebuild going into this year. Or Kipper if he thought he still played on a playoff team.

No shock. He might've moved if he thought 'cup', but those guys already have their goaltending.

No NMC for Bulin. Might actually make sense for the Leafs, but with the Oilers still playoff hopeful, might not be worth it to lose our goalie insurance.

Oh please, the Kovy contract was much, much worse than any the league approved. Those other contracts showed cracks in the CBA. The Kovy contract broke those cracks open into a flood of issues.

Ya was wondering about this myself. Nor sure what the rules are exactly, but sounds like there should be penalty no? Unless it doesn't apply with just one year left?

What's the hurry to retire? Weren't they talking extension during the Leafs trade talks? I know he his having a (really) rough year, but why not finish up the contract in Calgary? Does Cgy want him out?

This had nothing to do with homage to the Calgary organization. He has a family and they are settled in Calgary. It's loyalty to his family.

The guy won a Vezina, has 3 Vezina nominations and a Hart nomination, a Jennings, and an epic run to game 7 of the cup finals. That's hardly a waste.

Ok, I'll be the one to call you crazy. Do you even pay attention to people you are posting about? Played 70 games last year and put up 35 wins, a 2.35 GAA and .920 SVPCT. Yes, awful goalie.

Tons of teams would love that contract.

The Islanders traded for Thomas...Luongo has tons of value to teams that struggle to hit the cap floor because you get a good goalie who's contract (actual money paid) drops to a pretty low number while his cap hit remains high. They outlawed these contracts because they are essentially cheating and can (in the right circumstance) be a huge benefit to many teams.

Unfortunately, teams that spend to the cap, like Van and Toronto, aren't among them....

Still, 5.3 for a starting goalie is hardly breaking the bank. People talk about the contract like it's a Gomez, Redden, Lecavalier monstrosity, but it really isn't. Not saying it's good...but it isn't horrible either.

Yeah but with Bryz, you have to consider the entertainment and enjoyably mangled quotes factor. Thats got be worth a extra mil or so.

Plus you just know the hockey gods will give him back his mojo once he leaves Philly. Its how it works with us.

Perfect, that added some much needed comic relief to the day. I really hope you don't honestly believe that. If you do, there is no sense in putting any stock into any post you make because that is just laughable. Let's make rash assumptions based off of a small sample size from a goalie who has been hurt most of the year and plays on an awful team. Good call.
