TSN will now spend the next hour micro-analyzing this monumental move. I think I said it a week ago, this is bound to be one of the most inactive deadlines due to how so many teams still think they're in it and there are more buyers than sellers.

Good faceoff guy. And...well, good faceoff guy. Not bad defensively either. Didn't think he'd be worth a 4th rounder...

Well, if all the trades that happened in the last week instead happened today it would be a pretty big day.

A huge need for the oilers even a 4th line guy. A center with some size that can win a faceoff.

Pretty high value on Smithson. Who I know is credible in the PK end of things. But, geesh. Draft picks are flying off the board today.

Still too many forwards. Smithson, Smyth, Brown and Petrell as 4th liners. Something has to give.

Wow, it seems like all the moves have been former preds. Smithson, Hall, Santorelli, Hannen. Mark Eaton and Scottie Upshall look out.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Petrell or Belanger go.

Solid 4th liner for sure. Hard working kid that can win draws and play the wings. Nice pick up, he'll fit in well in Edmonton.

It's called a 13th/14th forward. Most teams have one.

Petrell or Brown or Smyth can all take turns in the pressbox.

Hall-RNH-Eberle
Paajarvi-Gagner-Hemsky
Jones-Horcoff-Yakupov
Smyth-Smithson-Petrell/Brown
Brown/Petrell

Ya, i know what a 13/14th forward is.
My point is that all those guys have been effective lately as every day forwards so i have a hard time seeing any of them sitting in the pressbox at any time although Smyth would be my candidate for pressbox fodder but that's not happening so i have a feeling that Tambellini will ship a forward out.

Pretty much this. Don't expect any offense from him.

Was more of expecting a 6th, but a 4th is a pleasant surprise.

And wow, TSN guys just said he was driving his wife to the hospital for labor when he got the trade call.

I think they would rather keep the depth. It's not a bad thing to have a good player in the pressbox. Lander/Hartikainen aren't ready for prime time. It would be nice to be able to have someone capable of stepping into the lineup and not missing a beat.

Sorry for being a little chippy in initial response.

Was hoping for this move for a while. Wanted him as a Belanger replacement. Belly will be bought out this summer I think.

No problem.

For the first time in a while, the Oilers actually have good depth so that's not a bad problem to have going into the playoffs and it's insurance just in case an injury occurs.
I still have a feeling that Tambellini ships out a forward, i guess we'll find out soon either way.

Oh man. Wow.

Anyway, good trade for both. Oilers needed someone better than Belanger for the fourth line and Smithson can play a good defensive game and PK, as well as has a strength at the dot. Panthers get something for a guy who could have walked for nothing.

Smithson is a heck of a depth guy. Big time upgrade for Edmonton on bottom 6.

If they stand pat now, that's a successful deadline for them. They're already playing with house money by even sniffing at the playoffs.

Don't mind the trade, addresses a need the Oilers had. Now if they trade some of the deadwood to get the picks back.

I wonder what kind of trade interest Lander would generate?

Definitely the kind of guy we want on our 4th line. Not a blockbuster, but it fills a need. I like it. Just a couple of weeks ago I was watching an FLA game and saw Smithson level a guy and thought, "He's the kind of guy we should get."
