Sure, but does not address anything past next 10 games. Why give up any asset ?

Not really. .899 this year and sub .900 performances in general are the norm for him, which isn't even good by backup standards. Hopefully the payment was low, and hopefully he finds himself again, or whatever.

Let's wait to see how it plays out with Mason before we declare this an abject failure. Anymore than a 4th round pick is completely unnecessary though. Maybe they wanted to clear the remaining money. I also can't imagine that Mason would have been given a qualifying offer

Flyers have to lose a contract somehow.

Not that it's something to bank on but change of scenery for young goalies can do wonders.

Mason couldn't handle the pressure of playing in Columbus.

The more I think about this trade the less I like it. A 4th/5th should be his peak value, and hopefully nobody with any sort of skill gets dealt to get us in line.

Positive point of view: low risk high reward. He is 24 years old. Most goaltenders don't even make to the NHL by that age. He has talent. The Mike Smith signing was laughed at last year and look what he has done in Phoenix. True enough Phoenix plays defense but that's another story.

goalies are strange- has 3 in my family

dont write off a 24 year old one. if he was good once, rookie season, are you gonna say with 100% certainty that he is a bust, finished, has no chance of becoming good once again. but 3M, what gives. how we handle the salary cap is mind boggling at best. hey we couldnt get bob out of philly fast enough could we.

Yeah, but he's still young. Goalies have been made into reclamation projects before. Goalies also have been Andrew Raycroft. Flyers aren't tied to anything here, and I don't see this as some kind of goaltending solution.

Don't like it. 3rd is too high for mason alone. He's garbage

I'm ok with that deal, he could potentially turn it around. Most goalies don't even start in net until after they are 25. They are supposed to take a long time to develop maybe he turns out well for us.

Trading away the Leighton is what made this cost a 3rd. It's amazing how that guy keeps screwing the team over in big and little ways.

Not sure how I feel about this. Maybe this means so long Bryz? IIRC this means a contract needs to go...someone crappy, hopefully.

Desperately paying a 3rd round pick for a very crappy backup goaltender reeks of Holmgren thinking we're a contender. I smell a BIG move coming soon. No reason to overpay this badly for a UFA to be backup unless you're planning on making a run @ the playoffs.

Yeesh. Do not like this trade one bit, though there is a chance (a chance) that Mason rebounds at some point.

Haha. I don't mean to rub it in, but I just want to point out the ill timing of this post. Your guy is gone, I'm afraid.

If they make the playoffs, then they also owe LA a 3rd round pick. How would that work?
