Why must we always have a dumpster fire in our net?

Looks like poor asset management to me.
+1. Excellent post and 100% true. We just acquired an equally bad backup goalie for 2013. It's great that he has "potential" but unless Bryz is being sat down for the rest of the season, we're not going to get a chance to see that "potential" before he becomes a UFA, so we basically traded a 3rd for 2-3 starts of Mason instead of Leighton.

Poor asset management.

Guys, please, let's all wait to see Mason's bench-door-opening skill on his new club before criticizing this deal.

Should have just completed the goalie swap and traded Bryz for Bob so we would end up with Bob and Mason while they have Bryz and Leighton.

Then the third round pick must go to next year if the Flyers make the playoffs.

BTW, to put that into perspective that's pretty much exactly what Michael Leighton's career NHL numbers are (2.97 GAA, .901 save %age), except Mason makes $2 million more a year.
I have faith that Mason can/will turn it around from his last few years with a fresh start.

I thought the Flyers don't own a 3rd this year. I believe that a 3rd was sent to Phoenix for Bryzgalov and then the other third they acquired from Florida (Versteeg) went to either Tampa Bay or Dallas.

The Flyers won't qualify Mason, so how is this an upgrade? If he starts every game for the rest of the season (which he won't), we'll only get to see him play 13 games before he's a UFA.

The Flyers gave up a pick for nothing.

Giving up a top 70 pick for a goalie who's been awful and need sto be qualified with a $3M+ offer was not what I was hoping for . All Homer had to do was stay put.

I didn't consider that.

Yeah this is piss poor forethought now that you mention this.

I wonder if Mason's cap hit can be brought down to something like 2 million for 2 years?

edit- After reading other comments I see that isn't possible unless he signs with the team after becoming a UFA, and if that did happen I would actually prefer the team acquire him for less.

holmgren is great at turning other g.m.s problems into assets

gagne who will be a free agent at the end of the year, is sitting in l.a, and costing the kings money, not playing and will not be resigned. call holmgren and you turn your problem into a draft pick. the kings should have given us a draft pick to take gagne not the other way around.

mason is sitting in columbus. he is costing the blue jackets money, not playing and will not be resigned. call holmgren and you turn your problem into a draft pick. mason will not be a game changer this season. in a few weeks you could have had him for nothing but patience is a virtue lacking in this organization. the flyers needed mason NOW

no wonder our organization is bankrupt of talent. the flyers organization just gives everyone a draft choice on any deal. in a very deep draft, the flyers have no 3rd or 4th round pick and two free agents who have contributed nothing.

Holmgren has laid out a new plan for the rest of the year.

It's called the T.A.N.K initiative.

If leighton started the rest of the year it would have been too obvious, but now giving up an asset for Mason and having him start the rest of the season and the plan will come into fruition.

Leighton was gone in a month anyway.

I'm not terribly upset, but it was poor asset management and a bad trade.

A pick outside of the first round isn't all that valuable but, in this case, it was given away for free.

Perhaps they sign him before he goes to RFA?

Similar to trading for KT and 19 before they went to UFA.

So we only give up the third-round pick if we don't make the play-offs this year? If so, I think it's a great trade. I like Mason, but I also realize he's played poorly these past couple of years. Still, hoping for a return to form.

This statement proves everything I've thought about you over these past few months to be 100% correct. You're happy that we just threw a draft pick away so that you don't have to see a certain goalie in Orange and Black ever again.

It's not rational, it's not a smart use of a draft pick, and Leighton was going to be gone for good anyway in 13 games.

I understand now why you really don't care about Bryzgalov's contract, because you live in some fantasy world where draft picks and cap hits don't matter whatsoever.
