Mason won't get qualified and Leighton wouldn't have been re-signed, so all that happened was that Columbus acquired a draft pick.
Looks like poor asset management to me.
+1. Excellent post and 100% true. We just acquired an equally bad backup goalie for 2013. It's great that he has "potential" but unless Bryz is being sat down for the rest of the season, we're not going to get a chance to see that "potential" before he becomes a UFA, so we basically traded a 3rd for 2-3 starts of Mason instead of Leighton.
I thought the Flyers don't own a 3rd this year. I believe that a 3rd was sent to Phoenix for Bryzgalov and then the other third they acquired from Florida (Versteeg) went to either Tampa Bay or Dallas.
holmgren is great at turning other g.m.s problems into assets
gagne who will be a free agent at the end of the year, is sitting in l.a, and costing the kings money, not playing and will not be resigned. call holmgren and you turn your problem into a draft pick. the kings should have given us a draft pick to take gagne not the other way around.
mason is sitting in columbus. he is costing the blue jackets money, not playing and will not be resigned. call holmgren and you turn your problem into a draft pick. mason will not be a game changer this season. in a few weeks you could have had him for nothing but patience is a virtue lacking in this organization. the flyers needed mason NOW
no wonder our organization is bankrupt of talent. the flyers organization just gives everyone a draft choice on any deal. in a very deep draft, the flyers have no 3rd or 4th round pick and two free agents who have contributed nothing.
So we only give up the third-round pick if we don't make the play-offs this year? If so, I think it's a great trade. I like Mason, but I also realize he's played poorly these past couple of years. Still, hoping for a return to form.
if they don't qualify him, who cares, as long as ML stays gone
This statement proves everything I've thought about you over these past few months to be 100% correct. You're happy that we just threw a draft pick away so that you don't have to see a certain goalie in Orange and Black ever again.
It's not rational, it's not a smart use of a draft pick, and Leighton was going to be gone for good anyway in 13 games.
I understand now why you really don't care about Bryzgalov's contract, because you live in some fantasy world where draft picks and cap hits don't matter whatsoever.
