So you're trying to say it's a good deal because we get the first chance to overpay Mason so that he avoids free agency? Now I've heard it all...

Get a look at Mason this year, and perhaps sign him long-term. If he bombs, it is a wasted asset. If he succeeds, then it is a 3rd well spent. He has talent and size, and is still quite young.

(I woudln't mind a decent goalie coach, though. )
You're assuming it was one or the other. He could have just stood pat.

2 things

1. What the hell were we doing with 5 3rd rd picks

2. 4/5 made the nhl pretty impressive

WIsh we could have packaged those picks and moved up in the 2nd round.

I could live with that for a season just to clear the bryz deal.

Even if we qo him and "try him out" next year with bryz, I can live with it.

Comparing him with what bishop cost...

No, that's you trying to construct a straw man.

Standard backup money wouldn't be overpaying for Mason. If he doesn't take that deal from the Flyers, then it was a waste of a 3rd round pick in the 2013 or 2014 draft.

Again, Holmgren didn't have to make a move. There wasn't a gun to his head. The best thing would've been staying put. The fact that you have to try and justify this move by comparing it to another by a totally different team for a totally different play speaks volumes.

Bishop is a potential long term solution in goal and they have his RFA rights.

Mason is going to be a UFA this summer. In order to retain his RFA rights it would cost the Flyers 2.9M. That's not going to happen.

Clarke was good at trading at the draft. Wasn't that great drafting at the draft though.

I honestly think this means Bryz is gone and the Flyers try for Bernier in the offseason.

Go with a tandem of Bernier and Mason next year. Just my 2 cents.

Oh really? Because right here, you propose 1.5M AAV for 2 years. That's not "standard backup money"

RT @davegisaac: Also, the pick going to Columbus is 2015 third-rounder.

Bishop is a long term solution just like lindback was...

Unproven...

People have been ishing and moaning about cut bryz for a cheaper option we can get the same numbers...well maybe we just did. And still complaining...

Mason has a lot of starts and has proven to be durable and is still young. Climb down off the ledge...

It should be conditional on Mason still being a Flyer by then. It's gonna be weird to lose a pick for a guy long gone, especially if he's only around for like 10 games

A third round pick is definitely worth getting rid of Leighton. Mason can't be worse than that scrub and who knows maybe a change of scenery will do him some well.

I don't mind the trade. I'm sure we'll acquire another 3rd rounder in the near future.
