Top 5 pick in 2013

With a team with a 1st round pick, say 20-25th overall, what would the value be to trade into the top 5 in this year's draft? Montreal is really filling their prospect pool and have their first, 3 seconds and 2 thirds this year. If they wanted to package some prospects, players + picks to get into the top 5 to get an impact player in the draft, say Lindholm or Barkov, what would it cost them?

I'm starting off with 1st rounder in 2013 + Leblanc + Desharnais + Pateryn.

What do you think? If you're not familiar with our prospect pool, you can talk generally, i.e. 1st in 2013 + a former first round pick, etc.

Teams in the top-5 never trade down into the 20s. /thread

Coming from an Avs fan, a team with basically a guaranteed a top 5 pick, no way we would even consider something like that. Teams won't trade you a top 5 pick and a chance at guys like Drouin/Jones/MacKinnon/Barkov for a 1st in the 20-25 range and pieces like the ones you are offering. Considering what teams have top 5 picks, they would probably want a young high impact player.

This. If the Flyers somehow wind up with a top 5 pick, I'd want them to keep it and draft BPA. No way I'd want them to pass up a chance to draft Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin, Barkov or Lindholm.

If the flames wanted to get into the top 5 to try to draft Mackinnon and Drouin (major pipe dream), would Baertschi + 1st (St.Louis) be enough to do it? Granted that the blues make the playoffs and their pick is between 15-20.

How interested were you habs fans in moving your top 5 pick last year? No team is moving back to 20th

I'd actually seriously consider moving Eriksson for a top 5 pick this year.

maybe but probably not, but does that really make the flames better?

How about to top 10? Then from top 10 to top 5?

Most likely your top prospect plus...It's not cheap to get into the top 5 from that far our maybe even top prospect plus your first this year and next.

Probably not but it might save the board in the future from the "Reunite Mackinnon & Drouin" trade proposals.

This.

I mean would you trade your top 5 pick for a low first, marginal prospect, an undersized top 6 center and some nobody??

teams in top 5 wouldn't trade their draft pick but maybe 10th would.
If ever Montreal does, it would prob be for a player like Monahan nothing less.
from 13th to 25th normally theres not a huge difference in calibre, Teams go
by preference in that range. So if we are not able to give Desharnais plus our
1st to draft Monahan, we should just keep our 1st and get someone like
Ryan Hartman which is a type of player that Montreal lacks because of his grit and physical play.
and they wouldn't have to sacrifice a player to draft him.
then in 2nd we can prob get Jacob de la Rose which is ranked in the mid 2nd.
a good size winger with grit and good work ethic.

We are going to have a top 5 pick anyway. Move in for another one and get Jones&Barkov?

4/5th overall for Montreal 1st + Calgary 2nd + Montreal 2nd + /Beaulieu/Tinordi + Desharnais/Eller (if going for C) or Collberg/Gallagher (if going for Drouin)

The only way for the Habs to get into the Top 5 is to throw a lot of quantity at a team and hope that's what they want/need. Galchenyuk, Subban and Paccioretty are probably the only players that the Habs wouldn't move. Not saying that's team philosophy or that I know what the management thinks, picks that high are expensive.

If you had a Top 5 pick, would you trade it for that package? Doubtful. To get into the Top 5, from a 20 + pick, you won't like the price and it would be irresponsible to pay it. Probably would be MTL 1st 2013 + Galchenyuk + Beaulieu/Tinordi +. Nobody is dumb enough to pay that.

I don't think there will be any trades with the Top 5 Picks, maybe even Top 10. And even if, he team would probably just move down 2-3 spots.

Galchenyuk alone is worth a Top 3 pick, if not more, due to how well he's progressed in his first year and the fact he was a 3rd overall pick last year. A top pick is still just a prospect, no matter how great they might become.

Sorry, but not in this draft. Would not trade Tampa's pick for Galchenyuk unless it was around #7 or #8.

Phoenix as of right now is in the #9 spot. What would it take for top 5 assuming 9 is where they land come draft time?

This draft is deep, not highly talented. Atlhought the top 5 picks are better this year, there still way off Crosby/Ovie/Malkin status.

so to get into top 5, habs would have to deal a 2012 top 3 who's already in the NHL at 19 + a 1st + their 1st in 2010 +++
yeah you make a lot of sense

at least respond with logic

Difficult to say, and to be honest I think this year most teams will have to be completely overwhelmed to move a top 5 pick. You have the top 3 then you have barkov and Nisch who some teams like as much or more than Mac and Drouin.

I think Phoneix would have to offer 9, Gormley/ Rundblad and a future 1st.

I think the Sabres have positioned themselves nicely to move up. 2 1st's this year (one of which will likely be top-10 or top-5 and Minnesota's 1st along with our 2nd and St.Louis' 2nd this year could allow us to move Minnesota's along with maybe Vanek to get 2 top-5/10 picks. I see Buffalo looking to get Seth Jones or MacKinnon, but that's just me. We need an elite player and I see Darcy working his way towards drafting one.
