There are no guarantees you get him as a UFA. We have a few months to work with him and decide to keep him.

Even giving him a 1 yr QO isn't that bad....

Maybe he regains his mojo with you guys but we are glad he's gone around here! We would have been thrilled to just give him to you free!! But a third rounder?? Sweet! Again I wish him the best with you guys except when playing us which will be a lot more starting next year! We know where to shoot on him though, High Glove Side!!
Thanks. Sounds like what we've been pretty much weaned on the past couple of decades. And better than Leighton.

exactly. Love to complain, that's the mantra around here.

Bishop has proved nothing.

And Bobrovsky hasn't solved anything for CBJ either....Mason was the man 4 years ago, things change.

Ian Clark has done a lot with MAson and he was not horrible this year. I think Mason has learned what crow tastes like and has become more humble and a better teammate.

Mason would blame teammates, trainers, ice guys, etc. for his problems. He would over commit, had poor workout habbits and thought his athleticism would keep him a start goalie. Clearly not the case but he's worked hard and improved this year. if anything, you need a good goalie coach and the ability to sign him for 2/3 his current salary (if not more). Let him earn his way back. He started to do that this year. Still let in soft goals but didn't seem to impact him like in the past.

I wish him luck. Honestly, I'm glad he's gone - not for how poorly he's played but more becuase I want to see him get a fresh start and extract the talent he has. He's young enough to succeed but he needs someone to stay in his head and keep him focused.

good luck
Realistically, Philadelphia is among the 3 worst (I'd say with Montreal and Toronto) places for a goaltender with self-confidence issues. Plus, if Holmgren does amnesty Bryzgalov in favour of Mason, the pressure will be huge for him to step up. And the Flyers are a little weak on goaltending coaches, so I'm not optimistic.

To the Jackets fan here: what if Bob gets injured? You have someone else to get in there right? No way you play Leighton right?

This trade doesn't bother me. The rest of the fans in the league may be laughing at us and of course I'd rather give a lower pick, but this pick is a 3rd (at most a relatively low chance of being a decent NHLer) and it's two years away. Getting rid of Leighton is relieving.

If Mason just needs a change of scenery type thing, he comes to a place where he's not expected to be the savior, nor is he expected to be a starter, so long as Bryz isn't bought out. I think this forebodes the following: they resign Mason to a cheaper deal, and then keep Bryz around for one more year as the starter and see what happens. If Mason regains his confidence, then you buy Bryz out the following year.

what happens when it's a 7 game series and the western teams actually get a scouting report to expose bob's bad glove hand?

i think bob will have a theodore type career...great regular seasons using his athleticism then not getting it done in the playoffs. He is a 6'2" goalie that plays like he is 5'10".

He has carried that franchise on his back within striking distance of playoffs

Which Mason also did, 4 years ago. Things change constantly. Especially in net.

The kid won the Calder and was Vezina nominated at 21. I think it's easy to see his struggles have had more to do with the mental game than anything else. He's a talented goaltender. It's kind of funny reading his scouting report from hfboards:

Quote:
Mason is a big goalie who plays sound positionally. He is a mature, confident and extremely poised goaltender, capable of making big saves at the key times in games. Mason has a strong work ethic, and thinks the game well. He's got good lateral mobility, and plays the puck extremely well.
... I think having Steve Mason as one of our two goaltenders moving forward is not a bad thing. Who the other guy might be moving forward is what scares me.

Bryzgalov just showing Mason tonight how low the bar for Flyers goaltending has been set.

It wouldn't surprise me with the weak FA goalie market to see a Mason-Heeter tandem next year IF Bryz is bought out.

I think if that happens somebody should be fired. If not everybody.

This was a very good deal! Holmgren FINALLY acquired a decent back up goalie! Getting rid of Leighton is a bonus, so the cost was only a 3rd rounder 2 years from now! Excellent!!

For my fellow Flyers fans here who think they'll buy out Bryzgalov, let me just say that I don't think that's what Holmgren is going to do. I think they will actively try to sign a top tier defenseman in the offseason. I also think that's where they'll be looking with their 1st round pick this year.
Getting a better, mobile defense in front of Bryz and Mason will be the goal.
If anyone will be given amnesty in the offseason, I think it may be Briere. His time here is pretty much finished.
They should also give up on Mez. He's as fragile as a china doll.

Where are you hearing they'll all be resigned? I don't think Emery will stay in Chicago just based on cost, for starters. Not to mention we could easily trade for another goalie (Jonathan Bernier, etc.) and then have a really nice young goaltending tandem that can grow with the rest of our core...

I am assuming but with Harding having MS and Hackett leaving I can't see Backstrom not being re signed. Mrazek isn't ready yet I don't think so there's that. I just don't think it's THAT strong of a goalie FA class.

Oh definitely neither would I. I like Heeter but I want him in the AHL more if we go the Bryz buyout route.
