Right, we should vilify him for getting better over the years.

Not sure if you can read, but at the very top of that post I wrote that those are the point totals for the league leaders in points over the last 2 full seasons.

I included the point totals for each of those players for the 2010-2011 season, 2011-2012 season and the current season as well.

although i think kessel is a great player, 7mill (is his market value) would be about right but same with Grabo's last contract and were talking about compliance buyout now.....(and grabos contract is market value)

I can read.....fine....I was just being like the individuals who state that people are cherry pick stats to support their claims....same as what is done here.

Why not his whole time with the Leafs.....that would certainly see a much different result...

$5.5m for a 58 point player (at best) is not market value. No way. People could try spinning that contract any way they want, that's a lot of money for a player who disappears for 10 games at a time.

And ~8M for a player who disappears when the going gets tough is alot of money too.

$7-8 million for an consistent 75-80 point, 25 year old player seems like a good proposition to me. The Leafs had that much salary sitting in the press box for the majority of this year. Don't try telling me that paying him that money, which btw is at most an extra $3 million on the cap, will handicap the Leafs in any way. This isn't a case of having another player who might be more valuable at that price point, like for example a Corey Perry, because there isn't another player available. There is no one who can come in and do for the Leafs what Phil Kessel has done these last two seasons. Not in trade. Not through the draft. And certainly not through free agency.

Only one thing wrong with this list. You have the cap hit for these players, not the salary they receive.

How much is Parise making this season and next?
How much is Kovalchuck making in the first few seasons of his contract?
The fact that Kessel is 25 years old and the longest contract possible for him will see him at 33, there is no possibility of lowering his cap hit to match some of the lower ones on that list by including 3 to 5 years of extremely low salary. Also, the new CBA doesn't allow this.
Based on that list, Kessel will see a salary of 7 to 8 for whatever term the Leafs decide to lock him up for.

yep, that's why I highlighted the contracts signed after the new CBA.

caphits will only be going up on those amounts there.

It's well within your rights to provide stats to try and support any claims you might have.

Kessel will likely land something like 7x7. He'll be locked up for a long time, and at a good salary too. I think Anaheim overpaid a bit to keep Getz and Perry, but that's their decision. A 7x7 contract for Kessel is something I think both sides would agree on.

Once Kessel's NTC kicks in he'll probably be demanding $8 million a season and there isn't much Toronto can do about it other than let him walk. I have serious problems accepting a player like Kessel at that cap hit.

We have the ability to trade him if that becomes the case, albeit in a short window. Nonis seems competent enough to at least put out some feelers to gauge what Kessel's demands are, as should any GM in that predicament.

Don't fret too much.

The difference being that Gaborik is 6 years older, has slightly more than half the points Kessel has this season, had less than Kessel did last season all while playing with a much better line.

Who wouldn't trade Nash for either Lupul or JVR in a second?
Who wouldn't trade Richards for Bozak in a second?

There is the basics (no gloves, 2 guys involved, that's about it), but there is no fighting in that clip.

I'd rather have Bozak back me up in a fight than Kessel.

I am fine going 6.5 mill on a 7 year deal...if he could take less it would help a lot...but reality is thats probably what it costs to keep him around.

I'm not trying to argue Kessel is a tough guy or anything just posting that because it's funny that he has had a fight when the other poster was saying he's not comparable because Semin fights when... Well here watch for yourself. Exhibit A:

My Contract sucks.....

Lets not sign him to a contract that no one wants to trade for.....as that should be foremost on a GM mind when signing contracts.

Not the purpose, but there should always be a contingency.
