I guess the Kings COULD petition the NHL to add it ... but I don't know IF they would, and I kind of doubt the NHL would agree to it, considering Mitchell's been a NON-Roster player ALL SEASON and seeing as how he just got his name on the cup last season. So I'd agree ... NO, WHEN not IF we repeat ! Go KINGS !

How about "**** No!"

Seriously, he is not on the roster. He is not a roster player. So yes, the real answer is no.

Like I said, I think he's done for good.

#lakings Lombardi indicated that, although it’s very preliminary, there is a chance that Willie Mitchell might not be able to play in ‘13-14

So when is Jason Allison coming back? Might be a good idea now to extend Regehr and Scuderi before they hit the open market.

So hypothetically, if he were to retire before next season, would his salary (as he is over 35) count against the cap? If so, would he instead stay on LTIR, which as I understand it disregards his cap hit?

Just put him on LTIR and spend his salary over the cap.

Since he is a non-roster player right now, I think the Kings could use one of their compliance buy-outs this off season. Would save the Kings some cash and the cap hit goes away.

Mitchell video in LINK, he discusses the whole thing.

Quote:
In early December Mitchell was working out, doing squats with his trainer, and the knee was giving him some trouble. A visit to the doctor showed there was nothing major going on, but he needed surgery. After a few weeks of recovery, he re-aggravated it and things have been a little complicated ever since.

It blew up on me,” Mitchell said yesterday, minutes after testing his knee on the ice for the first time in 2013. “Obviously it blows up for a reason. It’s the body saying, ‘A little too hard, a little too much.’…I’ve never had anything with my knee before, I’m learning that inflammation basically just shuts it down. So, I’m just trying to keep all the inflammation out of there and gradually progress to where it’s not 0-to-60 and your body says ouch and all of a sudden puts a bunch of inflammation in there.”

You can't buy out a injured player.

He can be placed on LTIR if it is still acting up next year getting us the cap space back. Because it doesn't save much since there is only 1 year left. Would get us 2.3M for next year but then cost us1.167M the next year in space. Where if he is on LTIR he is still paid but we can spend that money on a replacement Dman.

Each team gets 2 compliance buy outs that are not counted against the cap. This wouldn't be a "normal" buy out.

But why waste one on a player with one year left that the salary can be hidden if needed with LTIR. I missed the compliance part on the original post. And I know we don't have any "bad" contracts to dump that way but if it is money spent anyway keep him locked up where he can't go anywhere else if he gets healthy.

Even if he wasn't hurt, compliance buy-outs are at full salary I believe. Gomez and Redden got their full salaries in their buyouts.

It wouldn't be normal because he can't be bought out. He's injured.

I feel terrible that Mitchell can't return. Obviously his play is huge to this team but his character is fantastic as well. Huge loss for the Kings. I really hope Regehr can bring at least some of what Willie did.

Just question.
If Mithcell retires (hope he will be healthy) will his contract still count next season because it is 35+ ?

Common sense tells me no, because otherwise, anyone that's 35+ can retire at their will and collect salary.

Are we 100% certain that WM is out? I know there was a tweet a few days back, but have we heard from kings upper management? If not, I'll continue to withhold a glimmer of hope for his return. Yeah, I like a cinderella ending.
