Leafs at the Quarter Pole......ready for the homestretch....time to BURN THE BOATS

Exactly 3/4 of the season's done, time for the final push. Team looks pretty good all across the board, and they're finally healthy (knock on wood) just in time for the playoff push....or should I say the push for Home ice advantage in round 1.....

Team Stats

PPG: 1.22 (6th NHL, 4th East)
RegW: 20 (3rd NHL, 2nd East)

G/G: 3.11 (4th NHL, 3rd East)
GA/G: 2.67 (17th NHL, 7th East)

+/-: +8 (8th NHL, 4th East)
5-5 F/A: 1.10 (10th NHL, 6th East)

PP%: 18.8 (14th NHL, 8th East)
PK%: 85.7 (4th NHL, 3rd East)

PPopp: 128 (12th NHL, 9th East)
PKopp: 112 (5th NHL, 2nd East)

PP/PK Time +/-: +6:57 (13th NHL, 6th East)

S/G: 27.5 (23rd NHL, 13th East)
SA/G: 31.8 (27th NHL, 13th East)
SV%: .916 (7th NHL, 4th East)

FO%: 50.0 (17th NHL, 7th East)

HTS: 1170 (1st NHL, 1st East)
BLK: 608 (2nd NHL, 1st East)

GVS: 428 (1st NHL, 1st East)
TKS: 256 (6th NHL, 4th East)

The shots for and against are still concerning, but other than that the Leafs are genuinely a top team right across the board in all areas of the game. It's pretty dang impressive.

The team not only has impressive top-line talent at every position, but their depth is as good as anyone team in hockey, right through the lineup.

Leafs vs. Strength of Schedule (in order of PPG):

1. PIT: 1-1-1 (10gf/9ga)
2. BOS: 1-2-1 (7gf/9ga)
3. MTL: 2-1-0 (10gf/6ga)
4. TOR: ---
5. OTT: 3-1-0 (14gf/7ga)

vs. Top Teams: 14gms, 7-5-2, 16pts, 94pt pace (41gf/31g)

6. NYR: 0-1-0 (2gf/5ga)
7. NJD: 1-0-0 (4gf/2ga)
8. NYI: 1-1-0 (9gf/11ga)
9. WPG: 1-1-1 (9gf/11ga)
10. WAS: 2-0-0 (6gf/4ga)
11. PHI: 2-0-0 (9gf/4ga)
12. CAR: 1-2-0 (8gf/10ga)

vs. Bubble Teams: 14gms, 8-5-1, 17pts, 100pt pace (47gf/47ga)

13. BUF: 2-1-1 (12gf/10ga)
14. TBL: 1-1-0 (6gf/6ga)
15. FLA: 2-0-0 (6gf/2ga)

vs. Bottom Teams: 8gms, 5-2-1, 11pts, 113pt pace (24gf/18ga)

The Schedule hasn't been particularly easy or tough, and the Leafs have done well against all the teams from top to bottom....and as you'd expect, progressively better the worse the teams get.

Remaining Strength of Schedule - 12gms left:

1. PIT: 0gms
2. BOS: 0gms
3. MTL: 2gms
4. TOR: ---
5. OTT: 1gms

vs. 5 Top Teams: 3gms

6. NYR: 2gms
7. NJD: 2gms
8. NYI: 1gms
9. WPG: 0gms
10. WAS: 1gms
11. PHI: 1gms
12. CAR: 0gms

vs. 7 Bubble Teams: 7gms

13. BUF: 0gms
14. TBL: 1gms
15. FLA: 1gms

vs. Bottom Teams: 2gms

The remaining schedule also isn't particularly easy or tough....it is weighted a bit towards bubble teams desperately fighting for their playoff lives, though, so that might make it tougher down the stretch.

Home Ice will be tough to earn, but not impossible. MTL is 7pts up with no games in hand, and we have 2 games left against them. BOS is 6pts up with one game in hand, and we have no games left against them. We'll have to go on a legit hot streak to do it....but that's not out of the question now that we're healthy and playing well. If we can get hot down the stretch, with 8-10 wins, then even a slight stumble by BOS or MTL down to around the .500 level puts home ice in play. But make no mistake, getting home ice at this point is a longshot. It does help, though, that Plekanec and Bergeron have just gone down to injury......MTL and BOS have been extremely healthy this year, unlike most of the rest of the teams, and it seems like injuries may be catching up with them now at the end.

In other words, boys and girls, it's time to BURN THE ****ING BOATS, win some ****ing games, make a run for home ice, and make some ******* noise in the playoffs for the first time in forever.

BURN THE BOATS

Excessive periods in title.

Too many numbers. Did not read.

I'm going to go ahead and assume we are to expect a parade.

The only way the Leafs can go home is through victory.

Its the motto Carlyle implemented this season. Burn the boats that brought you = no going back, only forward. Seize the treasure or fail utterly.

http://www.tsn.ca/toronto/blogs/jonas_siegel/?id=413518

Quote:
"Burn the Boats" reads the more mysterious and striking of two mantras posted at the team's practice facility.

The mystery behind the message lies with Leafs coach Randy Carlyle. In the hours before the Leafs took to the ice for training camp on Sunday, Carlyle delivered a motivational and seemingly moving speech to his group, weaving a tale into his efforts to illustrate the point.

"He had a story about people crossing the sea to take the treasure," James Reimer recalled. "When they got there they burnt their boats so they either had to take their treasure or die. That's what 'Burn the Boats' means."
Carlyle based it on this

http://www.mbs.edu/home/jgans/mecon/...ning_ships.htm

Quote:
Burning Ships: The Value of Commitment

As legend has it, after his men got ashore, Cortés burned the ships that brought them. He wanted his men to understand fully that their only option was to win or die – there would be no retreat. Knowing their options were limited now, the Spanish army would fight harder and with more determination.

......

By 1521, Cortés and his small army had conquered the Aztecs. While it is clear that superior weaponry and military training gave the Spanish certain advantages in this situation, it is also clear that Cortés' strategy and the value of his commitment to it, was invaluable to the final outcome.

Nervous about this final stretch. Lot's of hungry teams.

Leafs should be anything but comfy.

They definitely can put a couple teams down a peg or 2. Complacent play in the final games could hurt this team badly.

All they have to do is go .500 and they should easily make the playoffs. A losing streak right now could make us, yet again, a team looking for other teams to win/lose. With the Rangers and Flyers playing a lot better hockey lately, or at least had good games against good teams last night, this might be tougher than we all thought.

They are playing well right now, let's hope this 4 day off stretch was a blessing for the bumps and bruises.

I've been rocking this avi all week.

For some reason in the back of my mind I still don't feel safe with us in the playoffs. Waiting for the X beside our name

The 98.2% probability we make the playoffs does not cut it, I need to see 100%. But I like the 5.8% shot to win the cup

One can dream

It's not actually a joke. To start the season, Carlyle had a number of new quotes put in the Leafs locker room, one of them being "burn the boats".

There's a story behind the quote about a leader who went to war with his troops and when they arrived, they burned their boats so that their only option was to keep marching forward through the good and bad and to do it as a team because there was no way for them to retreat.
