Listening to Lombardi about Willie, he said "other issues have popped up"...wonder if its not just the knee but also has concussion symptoms popping up again.

Depressing, sounds like the end of the road for Willie.

It sucks big time. Obviously losing one of the better defensemen we've seen in quite some time, but also losing him as a person. At least he can go out on top as a Champion! I personally think he needs to shut it down. Not my decision though, obviously.

I think we can rule out concussions. He's been attending all off-ice team events, traveled to D.C., he's functioning like someone who doesn't have a concussion. Concussed players usually don't partake in travel and such. It's his knee. Seemed like Mitchell postponed surgery and the knee got worse and as a result, he may have damaged it further (could be torn ligaments, who knows).

In somewhat positive news, from the LA Times article, Mitchell's agent indicated that he could be back by next season. His status is up in the air as to whether or not he'll play again in 2013, but we don't know how he'll recuperate from his latest surgery. The Kings just have to move on and if Mitchell ever does come back, it's a bonus. But if they do lose him, it is a significant blow to the team and you would hope that Regehr would do an adequate job in replacing him.

Could that mean his career's over then? he's 36 in a couple of weeks and to potentially miss another year would make it hard to come back from.

If Mitchell retires, his cap hit remains for next season. If he gets placed on LTIR, then the Kings can go over tha cap ceiling by as much as his cap hit. The Kings won't let him officially retire, similar to the Flyers and Pronger.

He got his Cup so either way his story ends well. So now we just hope he can make it back somehow, some time. Love for him to stay in the Kings org in any capacity.

The whole situation ****ing sucks, but I'm glad he could at least help us win the cup. He's a really difficult guy to replace and will be sorely missed...

Sucks.

Whether he plays next year or doesn't, it's been clear for a while that Job No. 1 for Dean Lombardi is find somebody to play alongside Doughty for the next 4-8 years.

Since the beginning they have said it is his knee messing around and I would guess they have found some **** with his ACL as well. The timeline for recovery would reflect that of an ACL injury if he would undergo surgery now. As DL said they will know later this week. An ACL surgery at the age of 36 doesn't give me any hopes of seeing him on the NHL ice again.

DL mentioned that there were debris in his knee and some some cartilage removed (LA times). It is known fact that if you have those kind of symptoms it is very commonly related to an ACL injury, new or old doesn't matter same result with the exception, an older gives you alot more damage from "being worn out" and less "material" left.

We will see if my assumptions are correct.

Scderi is 34 and should have 4 more years in him. If he is retained and Forbort or Gravel work out, does DL need to acquire anyone?

Doughty Scuderi
Voynov Regher
Muzzin Greene

Alex P Keaton Ellerby

Robyn Regehr

Dean has already indicated that he hopes to resign Regehr. He fits the bill for a Mitchell replacement. Similar style in the sense of them both being stay at home defenseman. Has similar veteran and leadership qualities, great character guy. Heck, he's even a left handed shot.

If Regehr plays well. I have no doubt Dean will target Regehr as Mitchell's permanent replacement.

Depressing, sounds like the end of the road for Willie.
According to the LA Times, it sounds like just the knee

http://www.latimes.com/sports/sports...,6516115.story

He just had a second surgery to clean up the knee. So, Lombardi was likely talking about just the issues that popped up to cause him to have a second surgery on it.

Quote:
Veteran Kings defenseman Willie Mitchell, who has been out all season, required a second surgery this week on his injured knee, according to his agent Mike Liut.

The procedure was designed to clean up "some debris" in the knee, Luit said. Previously, Mitchell tried at least one round of platelet-rich plasma therapy.

Mitchell, a big piece of the Kings' run to the Stanley Cup, injured his knee during the lockout and had surgery to remove some cartilage.

He reinjured the knee during his rehabilitation, pushing too hard too soon before training camp. At times, he appeared close to coming back to action once the season started but spoke of swelling in the knee in late January.

True. Hopefully we can keep Scuderi at a reasonable price. Even with his troubles this year, I know if he left we would miss his presence next year. Not to mention he's an absolute warrior in the playoffs. The younger guys have/could definitely learn a lot from him.

Based on Dean's comments, we're not going to be big players in the free agency this summer and I don't think we're going to target anyone else in FA to replace Mitchell/Scuderi. Both Scuderi and Regehr are going to have a decrease in their salary if they re-sign.

Dean's got some serious cap gymnastics to do for next season.

The issue of replacing Willie must be made by July1. We need to know if we need both Scuderi and RR next year if Willie can't play.

Best case scenario here...

*IF* Mitchell is ready to play next season, does Dean keep Scuderi and Regehr? That would be a killer defense if possible.
