Steve Mason has signed extension with Flyers (Apr. 8: $1.5m, 1-year, per media)

This is what I figured would happen when I posted about the Flyers being interested in Mason. I'm also surprised how many media types figured this is a sure sign that Bryzgalov is done with Philly, my guess is Mason is the back-up for next year, whether Bryzgalov returns of the Flyers acquire someone else.

Surprised Mason got only $1.5M. He made $3.2M this year. #Flyers

VOORHEES, N.J. – When Paul Holmgren announced that Steve Mason was going to be one of the Flyers two goalies for the rest of this year and next season too, he wasn’t kidding.

Mason, 24, who would have been a restricted free agent in the summer, signed a one-year contract extension with the Flyers worth $1.5 million.

Mason has played just one period thus far for the Flyers, making nine saves on nine shots in a 4-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets Saturday in relief of starter Ilya Bryzgalov.

Mason, the 2009 Calder Trophy winner as a rookie with the Columbus Blue Jackets, was acquired in a trade last week in exchange for Michael Leighton and a 2015 third round draft pick.

How can he sign for less than his current AAV when he's an RFA?

Kind of hoping Mason bounces back and plays really well for Philly just to see HF explode.

Are the Flyers sure they wouldn't rather sign him for 8 years, 6.5 mil/yr?

By the contract offer, a contract rejction would not result in the retainment of rights, because it would not be a qualifying offer.

His current AAV has nothing to do with what contract he signs.

As a RFA his AAV only affects his qualifying offer. If he doesnt get that level of an offer on a deal, then he is "unqualified" and becomes a UFA.

He can sign a deal for league minimum if he wants.

And after this fantastic year, Philly buys out Bryzgalov and signs Mason to the exact same contract.

I really want Mason to succeed, but since the Jackets will be moving to the East, this is a GREAT idea, Flyers. Please sign him to a long term contract as the starting goalie.

I actually think Mason could turn it around, but probably not on the flyers. I forsee huge disappointment. Should probably let him play before you rub salt in the wound some more.

One year isn't long term.

Competition with Bryz isn't giving him the number one job.

Come again?

He honestly can't be worse than Bryz.

Who's winning the Stanley Cup? What are the contract numbers for Mason? What is Giroux signing for?

Bryz had a great first month and has fallen back to being a decent goalie on a terribad contract.

Yep, Stewart did the same thing too. You just have to qualify them at whatever raise it is, but you can agree to a salary reduction like any other negotiation.
