I apologize if this is elsewhere, but I just read this and didn't see it mentioned:

Quote:
If Luongo is serious about escaping his contract, he can withhold services, which would allow the Canucks to terminate the deal. But the team would first have to place him on waivers, meaning Luongo would have no input on where he plays and could be claimed for a fee of $125.

Off topic; the NHL should have it like the NFL where you can restructure contracts.

On topic; I'd go 2-3 years at 5.5 mil to 6 per. Takes him up to 37.

At least one team would offer him 6M for a few years.

It would also allow the Canucks to suspend him, thereby dropping his cap hit, and not having to pay him. Or they could terminate his contract, send him through waivers losing him for nothing and eat the dead cap space from the cap reclaim clause in the new cba.

CAN'T IMAGINE WHICH ONE THEY WOULD PICK.

Doubt this very much

34 yrs old and not playing anywhere close to previous level

Probably would get a 3 yr deal at around 4M cap hit

That's more than fair and likely the sort of deal (maybe add two more years) he should have signed in the first place.

If Luongo was only signed until he's 37/38, he'd be on another team already.

Off topic - Are you the same Marlo from ISH? I stopped going on that site a long time ago (how many Kobe vs Jordan topics can one man stand?) but your name is familiar.

1) Trade Luongo to where he would start, deal would involve Van keeping salary while new team paying a heavy penalty conditionally for it
2) New team and Luongo break the contract, forgoing the penalty paid to Vanc and sign a new reasonable deal
3) Three sides happy

I think if Lu was a UFA he'd be bid up to $6.5M a season for 5-6 years.

I doubt two bad games this year had changed what GMs think about him.

I do not see Luongo being bought out nor do I think it is necessary.

Few people disagree that Luongo is not a good number 1 goalie presently and a cap hit of $5.3 Mil is more than fair if his contract was only over the next 3 to 5 years.

The so called "bad contract" refers to the length of the contract (9 years left) and each individual's estimate as to how many years remain that Luongo will be playing at a #1 goalie level as well as how many years a team will be stuck paying a retired player and being charged $5.3 mil cap hit those years he is actually retired.

What hasn't been discussed is in the next 3 to 5 years will $5.3 mil per year be considered high, medium or low for a goalie's salary (#1 and backup) & how many years will Luongo possibly play as a backup after he is no longer skilled enough to play as a #1 (he may currently play as a backup to Schnieder, but he is still playing at a #1 skill level - the Canucks just happen to have two #1's).

Let's say he plays the next 4 years as a skilled #1. and another 2 years as a skilled backup. Based on how salaries have risen over the past few years, it is not unreasonable that backups could be earning in the $4.5 to $5.5 Mil range in 4 to 5 years time. Knowing the dedication and fitness of Luongo six more years of playing after this year is not out of the question. That leaves the last 3 years which he may be able to play, but could also retire.

If a team had to suffer a $5.3 cap hit in today's market for the next 3 years when a player had retired, it would hurt, but it may be sufferable at team salaries 7 to 9 years from now if there was additional insentive. Such insentive could be the Canucks taking some salary back even if it was down the road, but another insentive could be Vancouver offering a conditional third round pick as of the year Luongo retires if before his contract is up.

If hes on the market there are probably atleast 7-10 teams that express interest.

Although in the end he would most likely end up going to Tampa or Florida.

I think Luongo would pretty easily get $6M per year for 3-4 years.

He'll sign a cheap contract with the Oilers and stick it to the Canucks for a few years.

There's already a thread extensively discussing Luongo's situation. Lets keep all the speculation surrounding Luongo in there.
