No Captain, 3 Assistants (Stafford, Vanek, +Steve Ott)

per Vogl:
Quote:
@BuffNewsVogl: Sabres coach Ron Rolston announces there will be no captain with Pominville gone, but Steve Ott will get "A" to give team three alternates.

Good. Hopefully next year we either don't see Stafford at all or get an "A" off of his chest.

Not sure how Vanek doesn't automatically get it. It makes me think that maybe he's told the organization that he's not thrilled with the direction of the rebuild.

The right decision. Aside from the fact that we might have a new coach next year anyways...there is no reason to simply hand anyone the captaincy because it is vacant. Only a player truly deserving of the letter should get it.

It would make no sense for a team admitting that they are rebuilding to name a Captain mid season

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, sounds like a Lindy Ruff move which doesn't surprise me because Rolston is just a big an idiot as Ruff was. Why do you not name Vanek captain? Will it disrupt the amazing team chemistry? Do more to alienate the only player we have had since LaFontaine that averages 30 goals a season pretty sad that aside from a 40 year old Doug Gilmour , Thomas Vanek is the only person on a Sabre roster since the mid 90s to average 30+ goals a season.

IT'S OK GUYS WE WILL TRADE HIM FOR PICKS N PROSPECTS THAT WON'T EVEN BE AS GOOD AS VANEK, its real easy to acquire 30+ goal scorers

I think it was Ronron's decision and has to do more with his uncertainty with the team next year.

Especially since there is no guarantee of who is going to be on the roster next year. What happens if you give Vanek the C, but then deal him at the draft to continue the rebuild? It just makes no sense.

Then again, maybe giving a guy the C would increase his trade value due to "intangibles". In which case, I fully endorse Drew Stafford for captain.

Miro Satan says hi, he averaged slightly more than 30 goals per year while getting crappy ice time also. I hope they slap the C on his chest and then dump his ass for picks / prospects

Wanting to keep Stafford but dumping Vanek? You guys make no sense, we need Vanek as we have nobody in the pipeline with his skill. It's unlikely even Grig will reach his plateau as a Sabre. Also if nothing else we'll need him to act as a role model and on ice tutor.

Vanek deserves the C, this was a stupid move.

Why does he deserve the C? What leadership qualities does he possess? Oh, he stands in front of the net and takes a beating. He scores goals. What else?? What makes him an ACTUAL leader?

Vanek doesn't want to be here.

We aren't "dumping him". It's his decision if he stays or not.

Good. Don't assign it to anyone until the team has an obvious leader and don't cycle it.

Let that letter mean something again in the future by not just doling it out to the best choice from a host of mediocre options.

The situation is uncertain, so the Sabres aren't boxing themselves into a bad situation. It doesn't look good to trade two captains in the course of a few months. If they named Vanek captain now, and then traded him in the summer, that's exactly what happens.

There's no harm in prudence. Wait until the summer shakes out, then let the team vote in September.

With 12 games left in the season and an Interim Coach I see no reason why anyone should be captain (but I still think Ehrhoff should get the A from Stafford). Wait until next year and let the newly hired Head Coach decide who the captain is.

This makes the most sense. Plus, if they're going full rebuild, then they're better off in the future putting the C on a young guy, officially designating a new core, and going from there. If they're going the youth route, then they need to really hitch their horse to one of those guys. No clue who that'll be yet.

This is certainly what I expected to happen, no shock here.

Except we know that I'd strip Stafford and reward Ehrhoff for being +11 on a porous unit, matching against top opponents, always playing steady, etc... but that wouldn't happen.

No solid leadership IMO worthy of the C on the Sabres roster today. Evaluate again in September. Hopefully the cream will rise to the top and it will be obvious who should get it.
