What are the Flyers doing? If it wasn't for them this kid's career would be over, at the hands of the Oilers (when he was yanked after being Terrible) at the game in Columbus that started them on the run.

There's no problem with a 1 year extension to platoon with Bryz.

A common phrase about Mason that we CBJ fans have is that he has "the ability to succeed, just not with Columbus."

So Mason can still do well provided he benefits from this change of scenery.

Our coach had next to 0 confidence in using Boucher/Leighton earlier in the season in games. It was a disaster.

It's going to be a 1 year contract. Relax.

I think a change of scenery will do him well. At least it's a hope now. Can't be much worse than Bouch/Leighton.

Well, you've never seen Mason completely implode. Watch his body language after goals.

There's a good chance he starts off okay, but then he starts to feel the pressure. If the Flyers defense starts having problems, leading to goals against, and his body language just deflates, then it's a guaranteed 5 goals against game or he's pulled.

His teammates in Columbus knew that as well and would just stop playing since it was a foregone conclusion that the game was lost because Mason was in suck-mode. Maybe that doesn't happen in Philadelphia. But I'm not sure how his new teammates will respond to typical post-game loss interviews with Mason where he says things like he had a great game, but they lost because of everyone else.

Why now? Why not at least take a look at how he plays for us for the remainder of the season before deciding whether you want to keep him around for next season?

Because they already traded an asset for him.

Homer is hoping this makes him look like a genius.

Examples of some game where this happened? Sounds like a fun scenario.

i still think philly takes another crack at bryz next year. If he still isnt working out, they can compliance buyout him after the 13-14 season. A bryz-mason tandem will work out well for them next year while they're figuring that out.

Gambling on a backup is a no risk move. Sounds like he's getting backup money. He won't have an Elliott like season, but those types of moves are made for players with potential all the time (Elliott is exhibit A, Barker is exhibit B). Worst case, Phillie has a bad backup. Complain about Bryz all you want, but he can play 70 games as a starter so a bad backup only costs you a few games.

Awesome news! Congrats Flyers. Mason is a great goalie, but an even better person. Well done, Homer!

I think this is a smart move by Philly. His value is quite low right now so it shows Mason that they have some confidence and that he will be with the team next year. It also gets him away from that terrible RFA contract situation where they have to give him x amount of dollars or arbitration. Sign him for less, if he does well you aren't negotiating from 3 million, likely quite a bit lower.

I was a fan of his, but there is no way he's gonna turn it around in Philadelphia. That's the worst city a goalie can play in, he's gonna get booed like crazy and he's already weak mentally.

If it's only for a year and less than 2 mil. it's nothing to cry over.

It sure is something to laugh over though.

Holmgren hasn't even seen Mason play in a Flyers uniform yet and he wants to tack on years. You'd think that fool would have figured out how to manage goalies' contracts after Bryz.

Given the expanded tagging money in the offseason, I could see the Flyers making a reasonable offer to Backstrom or Howard if they make it to Free agency, then usingt he compliance buyout on Bryz if either accepted.

The far more likely scenario, however, is that the Flyers evaluate Bryz, Mason and their top goalie prospect, Anthony Stolarz, to determine the medium term of the goalie position in Philly.

Note: I mean that they see how Stolarz does in London before deciding on a direction for 2014-2015

Mason's either going to bounce back or Philly will continue having goalie problems. Time will tell.

Stolarz is gonna need some AHL time and another year in London (if he's still eligible age-wise), so we need someone to hold down the fort for the next 2-3ish years. I don't know if Backstrom or Howard sign for something short-term.
