Just correcting the numbers from my post #886, I never said only about the prospect(s), just that the deal might include one.

Depending on how are starters fair, we are more than likely having to make a move for another top starter before the season is too old.

I dont see this rotation being great for the playoffs... a 7 game series...

We are going to need some pitchers to step up, but i guess there is no rush. There is enough hitting to keep this team above .500.l for the first month while the rotation takes form.
In a seven game series, we only need three competent starters. We have one ace in Weaver. CJ will hopefully round into form after getting that bone spur shaved off. We simple need one pitcher out of Vargas, Blanton, Hanson, or Richards to show consistency.

Vargas has posted great numbers when playing at the Big A. Essentially, he has the potential to perform similar to Weaver as they are pitching in a pitcher's park at the Big A.

But all the pitchers we have as a starting five have one thing in common: pop up specialists. I know it makes no sense, but since the Big A is a pitcher's park, most players won't hit as many HRs as the ball will still be in play. The Angels have two of the most dynamic outfielders in the league with Trout playing LF and Bourjos playing CF. (Btw, Trout was amazing in CF, but Bourjos is the better defensive CF.) Also, Hamilton will convert from playing CF to RF.

The Angels outfield was designed in such a way to complement the type of pitchers we have on the roster. But don't look at our starting pitching. We've had mediocre starting pitching for a couple of years now. It's our bullpen that blew 25 saves two years ago and 22 saves last year, IIRC. We have to focus on how our bullpen does this year. We picked up a couple of arms this off-season for the bullpen in Burnett and Madson, who we probably won't see until the middle of the season or earlier depending on his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Also note, Garrett Richards and Jerome Williams will not be part of the starting five. Both now belong to the bullpen. Richards may go down to AAA to hone on being a starter instead. Then there's youngster Maronde, who had his cup of coffee last season.

So don't worry about our starting pitching as it wasn't them that couldn't close out games (25 and 22 blown saves, respectively) and get the Angels to the playoffs. But with acquiring Hamilton, we have just added scoring insurance; making Bourjos the starting CF, moves Trout to LF and keeps Hamilton to RF, improves the outfield defense tremendously as well as may help keep Hamilton healthy throughout the year.

The pitching on this team is absolutely atrocious.

Trumbo still looks awful. He still hasn't rebounded from his awful second half. I'm about ready to sit his ass down

Trade bait to get some pitching help?

The league pitchers figured him out last season, Trumbo just has to adjust.

That's why Trumbo is the DH. Also, on the roster, I think (I need to look this up) is switch hitting Hank Conger. Very good hitter, Conger is, but a below average catcher. See Napoli. See dog house afterwards. LoL

Imo biggest problem of baseball...they need "shootouts"

Iannetta rocked there, Weaver was solid and bullpen didn't blow up the game.

i was thinking about that...i mean its opening day and your playing in a 4 hr. game....its the 1st game of the year in a LOOOONG season...i dont know how but there has to be a way to force offense...i know 90% of fans would hate it but come on they have to wake up and do it again in less than 24 hrs.....i guess you could force pitchers to throw only fastballs, or start the 10th off w/a runner on 1st , then 11th a runner on 2nd, and 12th thru completion a runner on 3rd

I watched 2 innings live and next day signed in to MLB.tv and saw that the game looks pretty long well it's a good option then having a forward-button.

Don't you get a blown save only when you are leading a game?

That's what I thought. What's there to save if you don't have the lead?

I know it's only 3 games into the season but if the Angels start slow once again you will see a coaching change. I for one would like to see a new manager. I feel that it's been long over due.

I'm so sick of Mike Scioscia. Why the **** would you have Aybar bunt there? Just wasting outs.

To get the tying run in scoring position for two of the most potent run producers in the MLB. Or was that not a serious question?

Why not hit and run? Aybar was 3-3 going into that at bat and Hamilton and Pujols had been struggling. You should give Aybar a chance to swing the bat there. Also, playing for the tie on the road is never smart. If Aybar goes up the middle for a single there, Trout can probably get to third and we have first and third nobody out and the potential for a big inning.

Overall though, I'm disappointed in the way this team always starts the year. Scioscia is incapable of getting the team prepared to start the season. We will probably dig ourselves another huge hole by starting the season 10-15. He cost us the season with his managing in April last year, there is a strong chance he does it again.

Also, pitching to Votto with first base open yesterday...wtf is that?

Guy has warn out his welcome. Time to move on. I've been sick of the guy for 3 years now. It just gets worse and worse each year

Scioscia will not have a chance this year for us to have a "bad start". I think he is on the hotseat and will be gone if the Angels lose to Texas. He's a bad manager for this team. Let's call up Joe Torre and get him.

Bunting in that spot is the toght play and is playing the percentages. If Aybar fails to move him over or GIDP then you are up in arms about not advancing the runner via bunt when we need 1 run to tie.
