This. I think we're guilty of reading a little to much into Edwards statement.

He shouldve been more specific like '' we are not going to be like the oilers''

as an oiler fan it took the oiler management 2 or 3 season to admit it was a rebuild and they made some fracked up mistakes before they finally admitted they had to do it: the contracts to habby, Hiorcoff, Souray and a few trades done to get help right away.

In 2007 the oilers had 3 number draft picks in the first 21picks and they thought that was all the needed to do--Gagner worked out-- but no one else did.

The sooner the flames commit to the rebuild full on--the quicker the pain will be over. Oiler fans for 6 years have had to put up with a rebuild that should have started properly in 2007--but the powers that be did not commit 100% to the rebuild. Wasn't until 2009/2010 that they realized what needed to be done

Bang on.

What kind of message is he supposed to send to the young players coming into the organization in the future? "Don't worry guys, we're rebuilding and not looking to win. Take it easy for the next couple years."? The culture with this team has to change, meaning you have to develop these kids with that hate to lose mentality.

Is he right a lot or is this just a fluke or something?

How about "work hard and keep improving and the winning will take care of itself"?

If Feaster can't figure out how to do a rebuild (Including the development of messaging needed to send young players) maybe he should step aside and let someone competent do it for him.

No one expects Feaster to admit the obvious goal is to lose games while building skill and experience, but he sure as hell shouldn't be pushed into doing exactly what this sordid bunch has done for the last handful of years.

"From the standpoint of the organization, the expectation, this is not one where you say to the players 'we are in some full-blown rebuild model, don't worry about winning, don't worry about improving, don't worry about competing,'" said Feaster.

"Again, no excuses here. That's going to be the approach we take to it."

It's a solid message for the players, but management should be focused entirely on two, three or four years down the road -- not self-preservation over the next calendar year.
I think Francis understands that this is a message purely to the players, and fans to an extent. That no we are not going to publicly say "We're not going to try to win, don't even worry about it." This is a team who is going to try to win every night regardless. Well except for last night.

And man, we've advanced passed the 1st round once in 24 years. When you say it like that...

That would have been the proper way of putting it. Doing things proper isn't exactly this organization's way, though.

Ya I saw that too, I didn't know it was that bad. Good thing we made the most of it the one time we did (i guess ). Moving on, hopefully our team 3-4 years down the road is more of a playoff team that the one we had the past decade.

What he should be saying is that "Cruising" or "coasting" is not acceptable regardless of where the team is at in its rebuild. The Edmonton coaches used to talk about this as well. The message you have to send during a rebuild is that people are still expected to work and play hard because that kind of character development is also needed when building a winner.
Edwards has every right to trying to ensure his investment maximizes profitability. I would do the exact same thing. How long does one need to own a team before its a marquee competitor? Id be so pissed at these GMs for failing to deliver I too would put them on a short leash. I too would start having to oversee things because if you want things done right you got to do them yourself.

Edwards is as much or more to blame for this mess. This rebuild should have started 2-3 years ago. He allowed Sutter to run the club into the ground . So it all looks good on him .

Not a chance, gotta at least give feaster a chance, it ridiculous it will be at least 3 years before we make it. Well get at least 5 good picks in the next 3 years they will be huge for our future. Really praying this is false. Really want McDavid in '15 and I think we've got a good shot at him.

Unless this means packaging our Stl 1st and Pit 1st to move up in the draft this year, I think that notion is going to damage the team. If done correctly, the Flames could possibly get their future this year in the matter of the draft. I still think Calgary should go for Jones no matter what and if possible ship the picks and possibly a player (excluding Baertschi, Jankowski or Gaudreau) and make a push for a quality centre if they are available.

To borrow a phrase from the Borg: "Koko" is irrelevant.
