Prongo is right. We don't have any other players that would even be close to helping us get a #1 dman. Maybe Laughton could, but he is not as highly thought of as Couts. We really lost out on our opportunity to trade Briere and even Meszaros. Had we gotten another first in this deep draft it could have helped is a lot in trying for a top pairing defenseman. With that said, i really don't want to move Couts at all, but I think Homer is likely to do it. The only other option we have is to try and trade a whole bunch of 1st round picks like we did with Pronger which will halt any progress we have made in filling our prospect pool. I also wouldn't put it past Homer to trade a ******** of picks, but it would have to overwhelm a team like Florida to give up the #1 and a likely star player.

Edit: we really just need to be very lucky an win the lottery if we don't make the playoffs. If we did, the roster would start to fall in place very well for the present and the future. But there is basically no way that will happen

The Flyers can still take a very talented d-man in the draft. You have to rely on the scouts to do their job. If they cannot get Nurse or Jones, maybe Risto is the next big thing. It's an educated crap shoot falling out of the top picks, but a stud may still be there. Or they can draft a talented forward they can groom and flip later, being as that is their organization strength (grooming forwards). You want to play to your strength unless you're very confident of the D-man pick.

What sort of contract should the Flyers offer Gagne in the offseason? I would like to see him signed for another couple of years at a reduced rate.

2 yrs 2 million. FIrst i doubt a team offers more , and 2nd i doubt he will want to play for a team that he is unfamiliar with. Although to offer a guy with concussion problems a multiyear deal is a huge risk.

Does he have concussion problems? I know he's had a few, but so have most guys. I thought that all his post concussion symptoms were now thought to have been caused by the neck tumor.

That's my understanding too. Not sure that it was actually a tumor, but whatever it was I believe he had it before the Flyers traded him.

It was a growth in his neck that supposedly contributed to his problems..he had it removed in the offseason. It was probably the result of the stupid weirdo injections he got from the Flyers doctor in his neck to help with his concussion when he was here. They were experimental and Gagne was desperate. The injections supposedly helped him heal faster but then had side effects including the growth.

He only brings Talbot level offence now and Talbot's defensive game and PKing is better, I'd only go up to the same as him $1.75 but on a shorter deal (2 years tops).

I'm gonna write something verbatim that I read on the internet today. Please let me know your thoughts so I know I'm not crazy.

"If Briere can be convinced to waive hit NMC to be traded than buy out Hartnell if he won't waive his... I think Mez can be moved and so can Cobourn but if the Flyers can find their losing ways again and land Jones than I would be ok with keeping Cobourn to play with Jones or him to play with Kimo and Jones with Schenn... truthfully I would rather keep Mez and play him with Grossman over Gervais (7th Dman)... It is all down to whether or not Briere waives his NMC (like I said if he does than Hartnell can be amnesty buyout if he doesnt waive his NMC)... if somehow miraculously they both waive their NMC and get traded do you amnesty Bryz? I am a strong Bryz guy and think he has absolutely NOT been the problem this year but his contract scares me and you never know with Bryz what he will do next year..."

Exactly. But basically, guy is advocating buying out Briere and Hartnell.

I fully support buying Briere out although I do think the Flyers will look around to see if they can get anything before they do that but probably end up having to use the buy-out.

Teams would be lining up to take Hartnell off our hands. I don't think we should get rid of Hartnell but if we thinking of doing that it would definitely be through trade. Anyone suggesting buying-out Hartnell should just stop.

Say we draft around 8th overall:

Buyout Bryz.
Buyout Briere.
Trade Laughton + a 3rd for Bernier.
Draft Nurse (I think he can play next year)
Trade Coburn at the draft for a mid first and draft Mantha (I think he can play next year too)
Trade Meszaros for whatever you can get for him
Resign gagne
Resign hall
Sign streit
Waive Gervais

Hartnell-Giroux-Voracek
Simmonds-Schenn-Read
Mantha-Couturier-Gagne
Rinaldo-Hall-Talbot

Streit-Schenn
Timonen-Nurse
Gustafsson-Grossmann

Bernier
Mason

Or a more drastic option:

Buyout Bryz
Buyout Briere
Trade Couturier, Coburn, 1st and a 3rd for the 1st overall pick
Trade Cousins a 2nd and a 5th for Bernier
Trade Meszaros for whatever
Draft jones
Resign gagne
Resign hall
Sign Horton
Sign Whitney
Waive Gervais

Hartnell-Giroux-Voracek
Simmonds-Schenn-Horton
Read-Laughton-Gagne
Rinaldo-Hall-Talbot

Timonen-Jones
Whitney-Schenn
Gustafsson-Grossmann

Bernier
Mason

I'd rather have Coburn than Streit (at this point in their careers), other wise not bad though I don't see it happening.

Everything I read about Nurse suggests he'll need at least another year in Juniors before making the jump to the NHL. So I really wouldn't want to trade Coburn banking on Nurse to surprise you at training camps and make the team. I'm really not crazy about Bernier but I wouldn't be outraged if the Flyers acquired him. Other then that I would be cool with your roster if it went that way.

Eh. Coburn has been brutal, and we need more offense back there.

Plus, drafting a guy like mantha with his potential could be great for this teams lack of depth on the wings to match our C position, and could lessen the blow of potentially not being able to retain read after next season.

What I promise will come to pass...

1. Bryzgalov and Mason are our goalies next year. There will be no Bernier. Just thought I'd crush that right now.
2. Coburn won't be moved.
3. Our 1st, should we keep it, won't be high enough to get Nurse or Jones.

What I suspect will come to pass...

4. Failing to get Nurse or Jones, we will draft a forward.
5. Laughton, the 1st, or the forward we select with that 1st will be moved for a PMD.
6. Briere gets bought out if Gagne is re-signed. If they hold Briere one more season, Gagne will likely not be given the money to make him stay.
7. With the uncertainty to Holmstrom, we re-sign Hall.
8. We will try hard to dump Meszaros and probably fail miserably.
9. Our team won't be vastly different from the team now but will be much better overall.
10. Bryzgalov will suck.

What my heart is telling me will come to pass...

11. Bryzgalov will suck so bad that we go with Mason, and Mason plays extremely well to the point where buying out Bryz and extending Mason is a legitimate discussion 365 days from now.
